A) 5:4
B) 8:3
C) 7:6
D) 4:5
E) None of these

Answers:

1) Answer: D
Downstream speed = 10+4 = 14
Upstream speed = 10-4 = 6
Now total time is 26 hours
If distance between A and B is d, then distance BC = d/2
Now distance/speed = time, so
d/14 + (d/2)/6 = 26

d/14 + d/12 = 26
13d/84=26
Solve, d = 168 km
2) Answer: A

Speed of downstream : Speed of upstream = 3 : 1 (3x,x)

The ratio of the speed of the boat (in still water) and the stream is,
= > (3x+x)/2: (3x-x)/2
= > 4x/2:2x/2
= > 2:1
3) Answer: B
Down speed= 5+3= 8
Up speed= 5-3=2
Let distance travelled = X
(X/8) + (X/2) = 10
X= 16 km

(Or)

Distance = Time *[(Speed of Still water2 – speed of Stream2)/(2*Speed of Still water)]

= > distance = 10*[(52 – 32)/(2*5)]

= > distance = 10*[(25-9)/10]

= > distance = 16 km
4) Answer: C

Let upstream be x km/hr and that downstream be y km/hr.
Then, distance covered upstream in 9 hrs 48 min = Distance covered downstream in 7 hrs.
X*(49/5) =7y
49x/5 =7y
Y=7x/5
Required ratio (y+x)/2 : (y-x)/2
= > 12x/10 : 2x/10
= > 6 : 1
5) Answer: C

Let speed of still water be s km/hr,

Speed of downstream = s+3

Speed of upstream = s-3

128/60 = 48/(s-3) – 48/(s+3)

128/60 = 48(1/(s-3) – 1/(s+3))

128/(60*48) = s+3-(s-3)/[(s-3)(s+3)]

4/90 = s+3-s+3/[s2+3s-3s-9]

(4/90)*(1/6) = 1/[s2 – 9]

S2 – 9 = 135

S2 = 144

S = 12 km/hr

6) Answer: B
Speed of still water : stream = 7x : 2x
Downstream =7x + 2x = 9x; upstream = 7x – 2x = 5x
Upstream speed = 3.5*60/14 = 15km/hr
5x = 15
x = 3
Speed of downstream = 9*3 = 27 km/hr
Time taken for 36km = 36*60/27 = 80min

7) Answer: B

Let the speed of still water be S km/hr,
(S+9)*18 = (S-9)*24
S =63

Speed of downstream = 63 + 9 = 72 km/hr

Speed of upstream = 63 – 9 = 54 km/hr

(300+x)/ (72*5/18) = 18
x =60 m (or)

(300+x)/ (54*5/18) = 24

X = 60 m
8) Answer: A

Speed of downstream = 9 + 3 = 12 km/hr

Speed of upstream = 9-3 = 6 km/hr

According to the question,
8 =D/6 – D/12

8 = (2D – D)/12

8 = D/12
D =96 km
9) Answer: B

Speed of Still water (u) =40 km/hr, Speed of stream (v) =10 km/hr
D = t[(u2-v2)/2u] = 2*[(402-102)/2*40] = 2*(1600-100)/80
= 2*1500/80

=>37.5km
10) Answer: B
Let upstream be x km/hr and that downstream be y km/hr.
Then, distance covered upstream in 8 hrs 48 min = Distance covered downstream in 4 hrs.
X*(44/5) =4y
44x/5 =4y
Y=11x/5
Required ratio (y+x)/2 : (y-x)/2
16x/10 : 6x/10
8:3
