3).10 yr ago, total age of P and Q = 20 × 2 = 40 yr

Present total age of P and Q = 40 + 2 × 10 = 60 yr

Present total age of P, Q and R = 30 × 3 = 90 yr

R’s age = 90 – 60 = 30 yr

After 10 yr R’s age = (30 + 10) yr = 40 yr

4).Suppose, present age of A is 4x yr and present age of B is 5x yr.

So, after 5 yr, the ratio of their ages

(4x + 5) / (5x + 5) = 5 / 6

24x + 30 = 25x + 25

x = 5 yr

Present age of A = 4 × 5 = 20 yr.

5).Total age of 5 members of family 3 yr ago = 17 × 5 = 85 yr

the total age of 5 members now = 85 + 15 = 100 yr

the total age of 6 members now = 17 × 6 = 102 yr

Age of baby = 102 – 100 = 2yr

6).Let the age of mother be x yr and the age of daughter be y yr.

According to question,

(x + 4) = 2(y + 4)

x – 2y = 4                       …. (i)

and x + y = 46                 …. (ii)

Multiply Eq. (ii) by 2

2x + 2y = 92                    …. (iii)

On solving Eqs. (i) and (iii), we get

x = 32, y = 14

∴ Age of daughter  = 14 yr

7).Let the age of Reni be x yr and age of Renu’s mother be y yr

According to question,

(y – 5) = 3 (x – 5)

y – 5 = 3x – 15

y – 3x = – 10                             … (i)

and (y + 5) = 2(x + 5)

y + 5 = 2x + 10

y – 2x = 5                       … (ii)

On solving Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get

x = 15, y = 35

∴ Renu’s present age = 15 yr

8).Let the age of Sonu be x yr

∴ Age of Sonu’s father = 5x yr

5x + 8 = 3(x + 8)

5x + 8 = 3x + 24

2x = 16

x = 8

∴ Age of Sonu is 8 yr and age of his father is 40 yr.

9).Total age decreased = 24 × 1 = 24 months = 2 yr

∴ Age of newcomer = 18 – 2 = 16 yr

10).Let the age of Bano be x yr

Given, x – 18 (7 / 12) = 23(1 / 12) – x

2x = 18(7 / 12) + 23(1 / 12)

= (18 + 23) + [ (7 / 12) +(1 / 12) ]

2x = 41(3 / 4) = 41 yr 9 months

x = 20yr 10 months (approx)
