Answers :

Directions (1-5):

1) Answer: C

The passage is talking about occurrences of the coronavirus in Delhi. ‘Identity’ is the fact of being who or what a person or thing is. ‘Feature’ is a distinctive attribute or aspect of someone or something. ‘Entry’ is an item written or recorded in a diary, book or journal. A ‘record’ is a thing constituting a piece of evidence about the past, especially an account kept in writing or some other permanent form.

None of these words fit in well with the meaning of the passage. ‘Case’ means an instance of a particular situation; an example of something occurring. It also means an instance of a disease, injury, or problem which is exactly the situation in the given passage.

Therefore option C is the correct answer to this question.

2) Answer: D

The passage is talking about the 3rd Moon mission of Indian space agency. The word we need in the blanks is one that means the act of “starting or setting something in motion”. We can immediately rule out ‘charge’ (A) and ‘stash’ (C) which are in no way even close to the meaning required in this case.

To ‘embark’ is to initiate a new journey or get on board a ship or aircraft. It is not quite an effective fit here. ‘Lift-off’ is the act of an aircraft (usually a spaceship) taking off vertically. It is normally used to describe when the event actually takes place (for e.g. the rocket has lifted off from base).

The term that is a perfect fit for all 3 blanks is ‘launch’ which means “set an activity or an enterprise in motion” which is what is required here.

Therefore option D is the correct answer to this question.

3) Answer: B

It is very clear by reading the passage that the event in question was something that was not a positive one resulting in stopping of vaccine trials. We can rule out ‘bizarre’ (C) and ‘evil’ (D) as they are illogical. ‘Complicated’ is another term for complex and intricate. It is not necessarily implying a negative or set-back kind of feel. ‘Unacceptable’ is something that is not satisfactory. ‘Adverse’ means (something) that is preventing success or development and is potentially harmful. Between these two choices, ‘adverse’ (B) is the best fit with the implied meaning of the passage.

Therefore option B is the correct answer to this question.

4) Answer: E

We can rule out ‘aid’ (A) and ‘reporters’ (C) straightaway as the passage is clearly talking about armed forces involvement. The remaining options are ‘armored vehicles’, ‘planes’ and ‘troops’. If we read the last line, then it is saying that remaining ( ) will continue to advise Iraqi forces. Advice cannot come from vehicles or planes. So the answer has to be ‘troops.’

Therefore option E is the correct answer to this question.

5) Answer: A

We can rule out ‘game’ (B) as it is grammatically incorrect. Since the first line says the team is already on tour, we can rule out option C (tour as well). While from a logical sense, ‘cooperate’ and ‘contribute’ are not wrong, the best choice for all the blanks is ‘play’.

Therefore option A is the correct answer to this question.

Directions (6-10):

6) Answer: B

The highlighted part is wrong because the tense of the verb ‘dominated’ is incorrect and not in agreement with the subject. Among the given options, B provides the fragment that completes the sentence most logically. The sentence after replacement becomes:

The Indian Army is now dominating the heights on Chinese deployment on Finger 4, which is located on the north bank of the Pangong Lake, sources said.

Therefore, option B is the correct answer to this question.

7) Answer: E

The given sentence is perfectly correct and there is no problem in the highlighted part.

Therefore, option E is the correct answer to this question.

8) Answer: C

The sentence is incorrect because there is a problem in the highlighted part. The verb ‘left’ is in past tense whereas the sentence is in a future continuous tense. Among the given options, the correct choice is the third one where the verb is in agreement with the sentence. After replacement, the sentence will be “Real Madrid areready to let Gareth Bale leave for a cut-price fee of £22million as they continue to try and free up their hefty wage bill.”

Therefore, option C is the correct answer to this question.

9) Answer: D

The term ‘weak’ means someone who is lacking the power of performing physically demanding tasks. It is wrongly used in the highlighted portion.

Among the given options, the correct choice is where the phrase used is “in wake of” meaning “because of” or “due to”. The correct sentence after replacement will be – “Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the government was working on a new digital transaction platform for street vendors in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Therefore, option D is the correct answer to this question.

10) Answer: C

Solution: The sentence is incorrect because there is a conflict in the verb here. The expression is singular but the verb is plural. The correct choice among the given options is the 3rd one where the verb is in singular. The correct sentence after replacement will be – “With a GDP of USD 3.9 trillion, Germany stands tall as the world’s fourth largest economy, and the scope of its growth has a better prognosis than most developed countries.”

Therefore, option C is the correct answer to this question.
