UPSC Full Form – History of UPSC

The Royal Commission on Superior Civil Service, which had equal numbers of Indian and British members, was established in the year 1923 under the chairmanship of Lord Lee of Fareham. It was established in the following year, 1924, on the recommendation of the report submitted by the Public Service Commission. Following are a few of the Lee Commission’s main recommendations:

  • 40% of the future recruitment should be British
  • 40% of Indians should be directly recruited
  • 20% of Indians from provisional services should be promoted

The first Public Service Commission was established on October 1st, 1926, with Sir Ross Barker serving as its chairman. It was a small advisory committee with little authority. As a result, the Federal Union Public Service Commission, which became the Union Public Service Commission, or UPSC, after India gained independence on January 26, 1950, was made possible by the Government of India Act of 1935.
