RBI Sets WMA Limit for Government of India At Rs 35000 For Second Half Of FY 2019-20

  • The Reserve Bank of India, in consultation with the Government of India has decided that the limits for Ways and Means Advances (WMA) for the second half of the financial year 2019-20 (October 2019 to March 2020) will be 35,000 crore.
  • The Reserve Bank retains the flexibility to revise the limit at any time, in consultation with the Government of India, taking into consideration the prevailing circumstances.
  • The Reserve Bank may trigger fresh floatation of market loans when the Government of India utilises 75 per cent of the WMA limit. The interest rate on WMA will be Repo Rate and overdraft will be 2% above the Repo Rate.

SBI becomes first Indian bank to have office in Australia’s Victoria

  • The State Bank of India becoming the first Indian bank to have a branch in the Australian state of Victoria.
  • The Melbourne office will assist the growing trade and investment relations between Victoria and India and is the outcome of the state’s 10-year India Strategy – our shared future

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu presents the 28th SaraswatiSamman to Dr. K. Siva Reddy in New Delhi

  • The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu presented the 28th SaraswatiSamman for the year 2018 to Dr. K. Siva Reddy for his Telugu poetry collection ‘PakkakiOttigilite’.
  • He was presented the award during a ceremony organized by the KK Birla Foundation in New Delhi on September 28, 2019.
  • The award is given annually by the New Delhi based K. Birla Foundation since 1991 for outstanding prose or poetry literary works in any of the 22 languages of India listed in Schedule VIII of the Constitution of India.

Scientist ThanuPadmanabhan gets M P Birla Memorial Award

  • Noted physicist ThanuPadmanabhan received the M P Birla Memorial Award 2019 for his contributions to the world of cosmology.
  • Padmanabhan, a professor of Inter-university Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune, received the award at a programme held at the M P Birla Planetarium.
  • Padmanabhan, a visiting faculty to several institutes in the US and the UK, has contributed to the fields of general relativity, gravitation and cosmology
  • The M P Birla Memorial Award comprises a citation, trophy and a cheque for Rs. 2,51,000
  • The award was introduced in 1993 in recognition to the excellence in research in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Science and related areas.

64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, 2019, Uganda

  • One of the largest annual gatherings of Commonwealth Parliamentarians will take place from 22 to 29 September 2019 at the 64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) hosted by the CPA Uganda Branch and the Parliament of Uganda.
  • The conference will be hosted by the CPA President Designate (2018-2019), Rt Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda.
  • The main conference theme is: ‘Adaption, engagement, and evolution of parliaments in a rapidly changing Commonwealth’.
  • During the 64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, there will also be a number of additional conferences and meetings including: 37th CPA Small Branches Conference; 6th triennial Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Conference; 64th CPA General Assembly; meetings of the CPA Executive Committee; and the Society of Clerks at the Table (SOCATT) meetings.
  • This year, the conference will hold elections for the Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP), the CPA Treasurer and the CPA Small Branches Chairperson for new three-year terms.

Aegon Life to sell insurance through Paytm to strengthen digital presence

  • Aegon Life Insurance announced its tie-up with Paytm, India’s largest digital payments platform, to offer comprehensive insurance products.
  • Aegon is one of the pioneers in adopting tech and digitisation in the insurance space and the company will now offer its products through Paytm as well.
  • As per this agreement, Paytm will distribute Aegon Life products to its customers. The product portfolio comprises existing and co-created tailor-made propositions.
    Through this partnership, Aegon Life will deepen the penetration of its product offers and enable more policy holders to access their risk solutions.

National e Governance Division (NeGD) signed anMoU with The National Law Institute  University (NLIU), Bhopal

  • National eGovernance Division (NeGD), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) & The National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal have signed anMoU to implement an ‘Online Capacity Building Programme on Cyber Law, Crime Investigation and Digital Forensics through NeGD Learning Management System (LMS)’.
  • The goal of this programme is to enable Police Officers, State Cyber Cells, Law Enforcement Agencies, Prosecutors and Judicial Officers to acquire the requisite skills to deal with Cyber Forensics cases efficiently
  • NeGD, under the Digital India Programme in collaboration with NLIU Bhopal has taken this initiative to offer 9 months Online PG Diploma Course in Cyber Law, Crime Investigation & Digital Forensics to 1000 officials through its Learning Management System (LMS).

  • In Tennis, SumitNagal has won the men’s singles title of ATP Challenger Tournament at Buenos Aires in Argentina.
  • He defeated local favouriteFacundoBognis in straight to claim the 54,160 US dollars prize money.
  • The 22-year-old from Haryana, seeded seventh, outclassed 8th seed Bognis of Argentina to become first Indian to win on South American clay court.

China tops medal table at 2019 weightlifting worlds

  • China topped the medal table with 29 gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals at the 2019 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships PATTAYA, Thailand.
  • DPR Korea finished second with 7 gold, 12 silver and 5 bronze medals.
  • In the men’s over 109kg category, Georgia’s LashaTalakhadze broke all three world records in snatch, clean and jerk and total and secured all three gold medals for his country.
  • The 10-day championships also served as qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Former Foreign Secretary K P S Menon (Junior) Passes Away

  • Former diplomat K P S Menon (junior), who served as the Foreign Secretary of India from 1987 to 1989, has passed away at the age of 90.
  • Menon was a 1951 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer.
  • He was the son of K P S (Kumara Padma Sivasankara) Menon (senior), who was the first Foreign Secretary of independent India.

INA veteran V Ganesan passes away

  • Indian National Army (INA) veteranV Ganesan passed away at the age of 90.
  • He joinedNethaji’s INA at the age of 18 and received six months of military training in Singapore.
  • He was honoured by the President of India in 2012 at a function in RashtrapatiBhavan. He also a recipient of Copper Plaques from both the central and state governments.
