World Father’s Day

  • World Father’s Dayis observed every year on third Sunday of June to commemorate fatherhood and appreciates all fathers for their support and contribution to the society. In 2019, Father’s Day falls on 16 June.

International Day of Family Remittances

  • The International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR)is a United Nations General Assembly recognized day, observed on 16 June each year to celebrate the contribution of migrant workers to improve the lives of their family members back home, and to create a future of hope for their children.

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

  • Since 1995, this day is observed to spread awareness about the international cooperation to combat desertification and the effects of drought. The United Nation General Assembly in 1994 declared 17 June as the “World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought”.
  • It is a unique occasion to remind people that desertification can be effectively tackled, solutions are possible and important is participation and cooperation at all levels.

World’s highest operating weather stations installed on Everest

  • The National Geographic Society has announced the successful installation of the worlds highest operating weather stations on Mount Everest to provide researchers, climbers, and the public with near real-time information about mountain conditions.
  • The other stations were placed at Phortse (3,810 m), Everest Base Camp (5,315 m) and Camp II (6,464 m), each weather station will record data on temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed, and wind direction.
  • The Balcony weather station is the first weather station installed at an elevation above 8,000 metres.

J&K Bank to now come under RTI act, CVC guidelines

  • The board of directors of Jammu & Kashmir Bank decided to bring the bank under the J&K RTI Act, 2009 and the CVC guidelines.
  • The board, which met under the chairmanship of the bank’s interim Chairman and Managing Director R.S. Chhibber, took significant decisions to improve the governance and bring transparency in the functioning of the bank.
  • The board decided to implement J&K RTI Act 2009 and the CVC guidelines from June 17, 2019. The board took these important decisions after receiving directions from the state government that owns 59 per cent of the bank’s shares

ADB sanctions Rs. 1650 core to Tripura for infrastructure development in 7 district headquarters

  • The Asian Development Bank(ADB) has  approved a project submitted by Urban Development Department (UDD) amounting to Rs. 1650 crore for overall infrastructure development of seven district headquarters town.
  • The fund is meant for development of piped water supply, underground drainage, underground sewage or scientific septage management, roads with pavement.
  • The seven district headquarters where the ambitious plan will be implemented include-Khowai, Ambassa, Dharmnagar, Kailashahar, Udaipur, Bishramganj, Belonia.
  • The ADB will provide Rs. 1650 crore and out of which 80% is grant in aid and the state will have to repay back only 20% loan in due course of time.

UCO Bank declares Yashovardhan Birla willful defaulter

  • Kolkata-based lender UCO Bank declared Yashovardhan Birla as a willful defaulter after Birla Surya Ltd failed to repay loans of ₹65 crore.
  • Yashovardhan Birla is the director of Birla Surya and also chairman of the Yash Birla Group, an industrial conglomerate. According to the notice, Birla Surya Ltd was sanctioned a credit limit of ₹100 crore for fund-based facilities for the purpose of manufacturing of multi-crystalline solar photovoltaic cells from UCO Bank’s corporate branch at Nariman Point, Mumbai.
  • The present balance outstanding is ₹65 crore plus unapplied interest from the date of turning into a non-performing asset (NPA), 3 June, 2013.

Akshay Patra’s school meals project wins BBC World Service Global Champion Award

  • Akshaya Patra, a non-profit organisation running one of the world’s largest school meals project in India, has been awarded the BBC World Service Global Champion Award for the programme.
  • The award was presented at the BBC Food and Farming Awards in Bristol in London, UK.
  • The NGO started to provide mid-day meal almost 20 years ago,now it reaches to feed 1.75 million children all over India.

Zuzana Caputova sworn in as Slovakia’s first female President

  • Anti-corruption campaigner Zuzana Caputova has been sworn in as Slovakia’s first female President.
  • The 45-year-old Slovak politician, lawyer, and anti-corruption activist is the first female president of the country as well as the youngest person ever to be elected to the office.
  • ZuzanaCaputova took over as the 5th President of Slovakia on June 15, 2019.

Padmaja appointed as India’s High Commissioner to Tuvalu

  • Government of India, announced the appointment of Padmaja as the next High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Tuvalu with the residence in Suva.
  • She is currently serving as the High Commissioner of India to the Republic ofFiji and also serving (concurrently accredited) as the High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Nauru.

SumanRao from Rajasthan Crowned Miss India 2019

  • SumanRao from Rajasthan has won the Femina Miss India World 2019 beauty pageant during a star-studded ceremony at SardarVallabhbhai Patel Indoor Stadium.
  • ShivaniJadhav from Chhattisgarh clinched Femina Miss Grand India 2019 title and ShreyaShanker from Bihar won Miss India United Continents 2019 title during the grand finale of the beauty pageant.

Australia and Qatar to participate in Copa America 2020

  • TheSouth American Football Federation, CONMEBOL has invited Australia and Qatar to participate as guest teams in 2020 Copa America.
  • Qatar and Australia will join 10 South American nations in the 2020 tournament.
  • For the first time, the event will be held jointly in two countries, Colombia and Argentina.
  • The 2019 Copa America football championship is being held in Brazil.

Peter Gilchrist lifted Pacific International Billiards Championship title

  • Peter Gilchrist of Singapore defeated India’s Sourav Kothari (Kolkata) to win the 2019 Pacific International Billiards Championship at the Yarraville Club in Melbourne, Australia.
  • Sourav Kothari defeated Peter Gilchrist of Singapore 1134-944 in 2018 WBL World Billiards Championship title.

Indian men’s recurve team bags Silver Medal in Archery World Championships

  • The Indian men’s recurve team bagged a silver medal  in the Archery World Championships at Den Bosch in The Netherlands.
  • Indian trio of TarundeepRai, Atanu Das and Pravin lost to Chinese team of Ding Yiliang, Wei Shaoxuan and FengHao 6-2 in the summit clash.
  • India thus ended their campaign with one silver and two bronze medals won in the women’s compound team and individual events.
  • This was India’s sixth silver at the World Championships where the country is yet to win a gold medal.

Former S. Korean first lady, feminist Lee Hee-ho passes away

  • Lee Hee-ho, a South Korean feminist activist who fought for democracy against dictatorships alongside her husband and future President Kim Dae-jung, has died. She was 96.
