World Liver Day

  • World Liver Day 2019 is observed on April 19.
  • Liver is one of the most important organs in the digestive system. Digesting food and flushing out harmful toxins from the body are two of the essential functions of liver.

National Civil Service Day

  • Every year on 21 April Civil Service Day is celebrated to rededicate and to recommit themselves to the cause of the people.
  • On this day Civil servants from various parts of the country come together, share their experiences and also learn other’s experiences of working in the public sector.

World Creativity and Innovation Day

  • The World Creativity and Innovation Day (WCID) is celebrated on April 21 every year to raise awareness of the role of creativity and innovation in “problem-solving and in implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals
  • The Day is a part of the United Nations resolution entitled “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

World Earth Day

  • This day is observed every year on 22 April to mark the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
  • In the Universe Earth is the only planet where life is possible and so it is necessary to maintain this natural asset. World Earth Day is celebrated to increase awareness about the importance of the planet.

RBI signs up for FX global code

  • The RBI has signed a Statement of Commitment (SoC) to the FX Global Code. The code, launched on May 25, 2017, is a compilation of best market practices, formulated by central banks and market participants, developed under the auspices of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Basel.
  • The RBI said the code is applicable to the wholesale FX market participants covering sell-side, buy-side and financial intermediaries, and is voluntary in nature.
  • It does not impose any legal or regulatory obligations, and is intended to be a supplement to the local laws, rules and regulations.
  • It is currently being implemented globally by the Global FX Committee (GFXC) in co-ordination with the Local FX Committee (LFXC) in each jurisdiction

Paytm Payments Bank appoints Sairee Chahal to board of directors

  • Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPB) has appointed entrepreneur Sairee Chahal to its board of directors.
  • Chahal is the founder and CEO of SHEROES — a community platform for women.

Gagandeep Kang becomes first Indian woman to be elected Royal Society Fellow

  • The Royal Society of London has announced a list of 51 eminent scientists elected to its fellowship in the year 2019.
  • Among these are Gagandeep Kang, who is now with the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, Faridabad. Dr. Kang is the first Indian woman to be elected to the Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS).
  • Princeton professors Manjul Bhargava and Akshay Venkatesh have also been elected to the FRS.

Cipla chairman Hamied received UK Royal Society honour

  • Cipla chairman Yusuf Hamied has been elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society, U.K. for his service to the cause of science
  • The Royal Society is an independent scientific academy of the UK and the Commonwealth, dedicated to promoting excellence in science.
  • His honorary fellowship of the world’s oldest scientific academy came alongside 51 new fellows and 10 new foreign members as part of the 2019 cohort

Indian-American Professor Sree Sreenath inducted into Cleveland International Hall of Fame

  • An Indian-American scientist and social activist has been inducted into the prestigious Cleveland International Hall of fame for his contribution in applications in systems biology, global issues and sustainable development
  • Prof Sree Sreenath, a long-time faculty at Case Western Reserve University, was inducted this week into the Cleveland International Hall of Fame, along with five other inductees Dr Akram Boutros, Ingrida Bublys, Paul Burik, Richard Fleischman, and Marilyn Madigan
  • Sreenath has been President of Sewa International since 2009.
  • Sewa International is a charitable organisation specialising in disaster recovery, education, volunteering and development.

IPR cell of Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has been selected for the National Intellectual Property Award 2019

  • The Intellectual Property Rights cell (IPR cell) of Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has been selected for the National Intellectual Property Award 2019 for its contributions in facilitating registration of Geographical Indications (GI) and promotion of registered GI in the country.
  • The award comprising a prize money of Rs1 lakh, citation and memento will be presented in a function to be held in New Delhi on April 26, World IP Day
  • The award constituted by Indian Intellectual Property Office under the central ministry of industry and commerce is conferred on persons and organisations working in the field of patents, trademarks and Geographical Indications (GI).
  • KAU IPR cell had won special citation for GI related activities from Controller of general patents, trademarks and GIs in 2018 and also recognition from PPV and FR authority for facilitating 21 national awards for Plant Genome saviour awards in 2016.

Malayalam film Bhayanakam wins best cinematography at 2019 Beijing International Film Festival

  • Malayalam film Bhayanakam (Fear) directed by Jayaraj won the best cinematography award at the Beijing International Film Festival.
  • The cinematography was done by Nikihil S Praveen. The film had also won the best cinematography award at the 65th National Film Awards.
  • The film portrays the visits of first World War veteran to a small village in the backwaters of Kerala’s Kuttanand as a postman during the World War-II. He shares with the families the good and bad news of the soldiers who took part in the war
  • Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Zero was screened at the end of the festival.

25th CARAT Exercise Series Kicks Off with Sri Lanka in Indian Ocean

  • 25th annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise series between the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and the armed forces of partner nations held on April 19, 2019 at Hambantota Port in Sri Lanka.
  • CARAT, the U.S. Navy’s oldest and longest continually-running regional exercise in South Asia and Southeast Asia, strengthens partnerships between regional navies and enhances maritime security cooperation throughout the Indo-Pacific.

India and France to hold largest ever ‘Varuna’ naval exercise off Goa coast

  • India and France will conduct their largest ever  naval exercise ‘Varuna’ in May 2019. The objective of this exercise is to expand the strategic partnership between India and France in the Indian Ocean region (IOR).
  • Varuna Naval Exercise will take place off Goa and Karwar from 1 May 2019.

 Navy chief launches new guided missile destroyer ‘INS Imphal’ 

  • Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba launched the third ship of Project 15B, a guided missile destroyer Imphal, at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Mumbai.
  • The launch marks yet another significant milestone in the annals of the indigenous warship design and construction programme of India. With a launch weight of 3,037 tonnes, the vessel made its first contact with water with full fanfare during the launching ceremony.

India Rises to 17th Spot from 37th in StartupBlink’s Startup Ecosystem Ranking

 

  • India ranked 17 among 100 countries, based on the strength of its startup ecosystem.
  • Top three spots remained unchanged with the United States, United Kingdom and Canada.
  • Bangalore, New Delhi and Mumbai were the top cities in the Indian startup ecosystem

Airtel Payments Bank ties up with Bharti AXA for two wheeler insurance

  • Airtel Payments Bank has tied up with Bharti AXA General Insurance to offer two-wheeler insurance to its customers across India.
  • This insurance will be available on My Airtel app and at over 40,000 Airtel Payments Bank – banking points, with presence even in rural India.

Election Commission launched Voter Turnout app 

  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched a new mobile app for the voters across the country to see the realtime availability of voter turnout during the election season in the country.
  • The beta version of the ECI’s Voter Turnout app is available for download on the Google Play Store and as of now it has been downloaded over 5,000 times.

Chandigarh to host Asian Billiards, Snooker C’ships

  • Chandigarh will host the 18th Asian Billiards, the 20th Under-21 Asian Snooker Championship and the 3rd Ladies Asian Snooker Championship from April 27 to May 3.
  • Internationally renowned players from around 15 Asian countries will be participating in this championship.
  • The participating countries include India, China, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Qatar, Syria, Korea, Japan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Iran and others.

Services lift Santosh Trophy title over Punjab

  • Services won their sixth Santosh Trophy title with a 1-0 victory over home side Punjab, thanks to a second-half strike by Bikash Thapa at the Guru Nanak Stadium.
  • This was the 73rd edition of the game.

Peru ex-president Alan Garcia died

  • Former Peruvian President Alan Garcia died after shooting himself in the head moments after police attempted to detain him amid corruption allegations in Latin America’s largest graft probe.
  • He had served as President of Peru from 1985 to 1990 and 2006 to 2011.

Scotland all-rounder Con de Lange passed away

  • Scotland all-rounder Con de Lange lost his long battle with brain tumour and passed away, aged 38.
  • The South Africa-born de Lange played 21 internationals for Scotland, making his debut in a T20I against Ireland in June 2015.

Mountaineer Rama Sengupta Paul passed away

  • Veteran lady mountaineer of  the country Rama Sengupta Paul, who led the  first successful all women expedition to Kerdarnath Dome in Garhwal Himalaya, died here following a cardiac arrest. She was 66.

Noted Bengali folk singer Amar Pal passed away

  • Noted Bengali folk singer Amar Pal died in Kolkata after a prolonged illness. He was 96.
  • The West Bengal Government conferred Sangeet Mahasamman on him in 2012 for his outstanding contribution in the field of music.
