International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace

  • The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace was officially proclaimed to be observed ever year on 24 April by the UN General Assembly on December 12, 2018 through resolution A/RES/73/127.
  • The Day is a reaffirmation of the UN Charter and its principles of resolving disputes among countries through peaceful means.

WORLD MALARIA DAY

  • World Malaria Day is an international event observed every year on 25 April.
  • This day is celebrated to spread awareness about malaria disease globally and also gives people the chance to promote or learn about the efforts made to prevent malaria around the world.

World’s first malaria vaccine launched in Malawi

  • The world’s first malaria vaccine has been launched in Malawi after concerted efforts of over 30 years to protect children from the deadly disease that claims over 435,000 lives globally every year.
  • The launch of the first and only malaria vaccine, known as RTS,S makes Malawi the first of three countries in Africa where it will be made available to children up to 2 years of age.
  • Ghana and Kenya will introduce the vaccine in the coming weeks.

Indonesia releases Ramayana stamp

  • Indonesia released a special commemorative stamp on the theme of Ramayana to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties with India.
  • The stamp, designed by renowned Indonesian sculptor Padmashri Bapak Nyoman Nuart, features a scene from Hindu epic Ramayana in which Jatayu valiantly fought to save Sita.
  • India’ Ambassador Pradeep Kumar Rawat and Indonesia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abdurrahman Mohammad Fachir jointly presided over the inaugural event organised to flag off the 70th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Israeli PM intends to name Golan Heights settlement after Donald Trump

  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intends to name a new settlement in the Golden heights after US President Donald Trump.
  • This decision has been taken as an expression of gratitude towards Mr Trump for his historic decision to recognise Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
  • Israel captured the Golan from Syria in a 1967 war and annexed the territory in 1981, however, the move was not recognized internationally, until Trump signed a decree recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the strategic plateau.

  • Russia has successfully tested the world’s first floating nuclear power plant (NPP), Akademik Lomonosova subsidiary of Rosatom nuclear corporation.

Pak journalist Cyril Almeida gets IPI’s Press Freedom Hero award

  • A Pakistani journalist has won the World Press Freedom Hero award of The International Press Institute (IPI) for his “critical” and “tenacious coverage” of the civil-military relations in Pakistan.
  • The IPI, a global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists in over 100 countries, named Dawn Assistant Editor Cyril Almeida as its 71st World Press Freedom Hero.
  • IPI’s World Press Freedom Hero Award honours journalists “who have made significant contributions to the promotion of press freedom, particularly in the face of great personal risk”.

Benny Antony conferred National IP Award

  • Benny Antony, Joint Managing Director, the Kochi-based Arjuna Natural Ltd, has been conferred with the National Intellectual Property Award for 2019 in the category of Top Individual for Patents and Commercialization.
  • Along with the National IP Award, the Intellectual Property Office India and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) have jointly conferred the ‘WIPO Medal for Inventors’
  • The Indian Intellectual Property Office bestows National Intellectual Property (IP) awards to outstanding innovators, organisations and companies in the field of patents, designs, trademarks and geographical indications on the occasion of World IP Day every year.

CURRENT AFFAIRS: BANKING AND FINANCE

Mudra loans miss target by Rs. 27,000 crore in FY19

  • Small business loans disbursed under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) have fallen short of the target set for 2018-19.
  • Against a target of 3-lakh crore, only Rs. 2.73-lakh crore was disbursed as on March 31, 2019, according to government data. This is first time that the target was unmet in the last three years.
  • There have been reports of a 50 per cent increase in the non-performing assets of Mudra loans in the first three quarters of last fiscal.

SBI Launches first Green Car Loan

  • State Bank of India announced the country’s first ‘Green Car Loan’ (Electric Vehicle) to encourage customers to buy electric vehicles.
  • The new scheme will offer loan at 20 basis points lesser than the interest rate on the existing car loan schemes.
  • The EMI per 1 lakh will be lower atRs. 1,468 for 96 months against Rs. 1,622 for 84 months, based on the maximum tenor, in line with the existing scheme.

RBI sells entire stake in NHB, Nabard to govt for Rs. 1,470 crore

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has divested its entire stake in Nabard and National Housing Bank (NHB) for 20 crore and Rs. 1,450 crore, on 26 February and 19 March, respectively.
  • With this, the Government of India now holds 100% stake in both the financial institutions.
  • RBI held 100% shareholding in NHB, which was divested on 19 March 2019. The current change in the capital structure of both the financial institutions was brought in by the Government of India through amendments to the NABARD Act, 1981 and the NHB Act, 1987

Punekar Puranik Yogendra first ethnic Indian to win Japan election

  • A Pune-born man has become the first ethnic Indian to contest and win an election in Japan.
  • “Yogi”, has been elected to Tokyo’s Edogawa Ward assembly.
  • Puranik Yogendra, a naturalized Japanese, secured 6,477 votes, the fifth highest of the 226,561 valid ballots cast, in the April 21 poll, part of unified local elections held across Japan, the Asahi Shimbun

Huawei, Infosys ink partnership pact for cloud computing business

  • Chinese telecom company Huawei’s business arm, Huawei Cloud, and IT firm, Infosys, signed a memorandum on strategic cooperation to jointly develop solutions around cloud computing services for business organisations.
  • The cloud computing system helps entities use software, store data and other IT related work without the need to buy complete software or hardware that they may need for computing purposes.

France launches government only chat app ‘Tchap’

  • France made good on its promise to launch a secure government-only chat app although it almost didn’t turn out that way.
  • The country has introduced a beta version of Tchap, a messaging app that helps officials communicate with each other through Android, iOS and the web with reportedly greater security.
  • All private conversations are encrypted end-to-end, antivirus software screens all attachments and all data is stored in France.
  • You only need a French government email address to sign up, though, and that’s where the security issue resided.

Jhulan Goswami wins CSJS award for best sportsperson of 2018

  • Jhulan Goswami, world’s leading wicket-taker in women’s one-day internationals, was awarded the ‘Best Sportsperson’ award by the Calcutta Sports Journalists’ Club.
  • The CSJS also honoured Bengal’s Ranji Trophy winning captain and former national selector Sambaran Banerjee and former India winger Sukumar Samajpati with the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ awards.
  • Awardees: Best Sportsperson: Jhulan Goswami; Lifetime Achievement awards: Sambaran Banerjee and Sukumar Samajpati; Special award (bridge): Shibnath De Sarkar and Pranab Bardhan; Special award (kabaddi): Payel Chowdhury; Promising Sportsperson of the Year: Neelash Saha.
