Ukraine and Britain sign security agreement in Kyiv

  • Britain, one of Ukraine’s closest allies during the Russian invasion, will increase its support in the next financial year to 2.5 billion pounds ($3.2bn), an increase of 200 million pounds ($255m) on the previous two years, Sunak stated.

  • “This is not simply a declaration. This is a reality that will come to fruition as a result of our cooperation, including security commitments from a major global power, the United Kingdom.
  • If the UK and other countries had provided such a level of guarantees after 1991, there would have been no Russian aggression at all,” Zelenskyy wrote on the social media platform X.

We Lead to Credible India: Indian lounges dominate World Economic Forum in Davos

  • The World Economic Forum (WEF) is holding its Annual Meeting from January 15 to 19 in Davos, Switzerland.
  • Attendees include António Guterres, UN Secretary-General, Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organisation, and political leaders from India, the US, China, France and Sri Lanka, among others.

World Economic Forum:

  • German professor Klaus Schwab founded the WEF. He was a mechanical engineering graduate who then earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
  • From 1972 to 2003, Schwab was a professor of business policy at the University of Geneva.
  • He founded WEF in 1971, originally known as the European Management Forum. It introduced the concept of “stakeholder capitalism.” According to Schwab, “It is a form of capitalism in which companies do not only optimize short-term profits for shareholders, but seek long-term value creation, by taking into account the needs of all their stakeholders, and society at large.”
  • The WEF website says of the idea: “A company should serve all its stakeholders, not just its shareholders: employees, suppliers, and the community it is part of.” As an extension of this, business, government and civil society leaders have made their way to the high Alps “to consider the major global issues of the day and to brainstorm on solutions to address these challenges,” it adds.

What happens at WEF?

  • Initially, Professor Schwab focused the meetings on how European firms could catch up with US management practices. Events in 1973, namely the collapse of the Bretton Woods fixed exchange rate mechanism and the Arab-Israeli War, saw the Annual Meeting expand its focus from management to economic and social issues.
  • Two years later, the organisation introduced a system of membership for ‘the 1,000 leading companies of the world’. The European Management Forum was the first non-governmental institution to initiate a partnership with China’s economic development commissions in 1979 – the same year China and the US established diplomatic ties.
  • Davos brings together some 3,000 participants (including paying members and selected invitees), among whom are investors, business leaders, political leaders, economists, celebrities and journalists, for up to five days to discuss global issues across 500 Thus, the WEF has become a forum for various stakeholders to meet and discuss global and regional socio-economic issues.

WEF Meeting at Davos

  • The WEF is largely funded by its partnering These are generally global enterprises with annual turnover greater than $5 billion. Davos was the setting for Thomas Mann’s novel The Magic Mountain.
  • The book is the story of a young man who goes to Davos to stay at a sanatorium for three weeks and ends up spending seven years there.
  • Relaxed in its serene environs, it seeks to cut through the many distractions of global politics to succeed in its mission to create a more prosperous global economy.

What else happens at WEF:

  • In the past, it has been used as a location for pivotal international diplomacy as leaders can break tensions in the town. The WEF website states that North and South Korea held their first ministerial-level meetings in Davos.
  • At the same Meeting, East German Prime Minister Hans Modrow and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl met to discuss German reunification.
  • In 1992, South African President de Klerk met Nelson Mandelaand Zulu prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi at the Annual Meeting, their first joint appearance outside South Africa and a milestone in the country’s political transition.
  • In 1998, participants emphasised the need to include major developing countries in the process. One idea was to set up a body to include 20 countries – half developed economies and the other developing ones. Such a meeting of what became known as the G20was held in Bonn, Germany, later that year. Participation was restricted to finance ministers and its scope was limited to global finance.
  • The G20 meeting was eventually elevated to a summit. This happened in 2008 when the US hosted a G20 summit in Washington DC to address the impact of the global economic crisis.
  • The WEF also went on to regularly publish global rankings and indices, such as the Global Competitiveness Reportand the Global Gender Gap Report.

CURRENT AFFAIRS: APPOINTMENTS & RESIGNATIONS

Denmark’s King Frederik X takes the throne as his mother Queen Margrethe II steps down after 52 years

  • Denmark’s King Frederik X ascended the throne, succeeding his mother, Queen Margrethe II, who formally abdicated after 52 years as monarch, with big crowds gathered in the capital to witness history.
  • Margrethe, 83, stunned the nation on New Year’s Eve when she announced she planned to become the first Danish monarch in nearly 900 years to voluntarily relinquish the throne.
  • The succession was formalized the moment Margrethe signed the declaration of her abdication during a meeting of the Council of State at parliament, the royal palace stated.
  • Denmark, one of the oldest monarchies in the world, does not have a coronation.
  • The meeting was attended by government representatives, Margrethe, Frederik, 55, his Australian-born wife Mary, 51, who is now queen, and their oldest son Christian, 18, who is the new heir to the throne.
  • About an hour after the signing, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was due to proclaim the new king on the balcony of the parliament and Frederik gave a short speech.

Royal Power Couple

  • Margrethe, who in the past had stated she would remain on the throne for life, did not give an exact reason for her decision to step down but said that a major back surgery she underwent in February last year had made her consider her future.
  • “It could be that she thinks Prince Frederik is prepared to take over now,” said Lars Hovbakke Sorensen, a historian and associate professor at University College Absalon in Denmark.
  • “He’s 55, and maybe the queen wanted to avoid a situation where you would have a very, very old king, as you saw with Prince Charles.”
  • The British king was 73 when he ascended the throne after his mother Queen Elizabeth died in September 2022 aged 96.
  • The new king and queen take the throne at a time of huge public support and enthusiasm for the monarchy.
  • The most recent survey done after Margrethe announced she would abdicate indicated that 82% of Danes expect Frederik to do well or very well in his new role, while 86% said the same about Mary.

Reformist Arevalo sworn in as Guatemala president after opponents delay inauguration

  • Anti-corruption crusader Bernardo Arevalo was sworn in as Guatemala’s president after a chaotic inauguration that was delayed for hours by a last-ditch attempt by Congress opponents to weaken his authority.
  • The latest in a series of legislative setbacks triggered by opponents underscored the challenges Arevalo faces as leader of Central America’s most populous nation, to which he has pledged to bring sweeping reforms and tackle the rising cost of living and violence, key drivers of migration to the United States.
  • Arevalo won August elections by a landslide and about 9 hours after his inauguration was scheduled to start, he took the oath as president, replacing conservative politician Alejandro Giammattei whose government has been engulfed in corruption scandals.
  • Giammattei skipped the ceremony. Arevalo’s unexpected election victory was seen as a watershed moment for Guatemala, where the 65-year-old has cast himself as a democracy advocate and the leader of a progressive movement bent on reshaping a political landscape long dominated by conservative parties.
  • A career diplomat, sociologist and son of a former president, Arevalo has faced steady opposition from established political parties such as those of Giammattei, whose allies have repeatedly tried to undermine his election victory.
  • Guatemala’s attorney general, an ally of Giammattei, has made several attempts to hinder Arevalo’s transition to the presidency, including trying to strip Arevalo and his vice president of legal immunity, attempting to suspend his Semilla party and annul the election.
  • The attorney general’s office has defended its actions as within the framework of Guatemala’s laws, but the political infighting has highlighted to many Guatemalans the limitations Arevalo’s administration faces.
  • In addition to tackling domestic issues, the government of Arevalo and Vice President Karin Herrera will have to balance demands by the United States to stem migration amid record-high remittances that keep the local economy afloat.
  • Acting on U.S. pressure, Giammattei often deployed the police and the military to stop migrants, and they used heavy-handed tactics such as launching tear gas at the crowds.
  • In his inauguration speech, Arevalo stated his government was committed to treating migrants crossing Guatemala’s territory with “dignity, respect, compassion, in the same way we will demand that Guatemalan migrants are treated abroad.”.
