Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund launches India’s first Nifty 500 ETF                             

  • Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund has introduced India’s first Nifty 500 ETF, an open-ended scheme designed to replicate the performance of the Nifty 500 Total Return Index.
  • This new fund offer (NFO) is now open for subscription.
  • Afterward, it will reopen for continuous sale and repurchase within 5 business days from the allotment date.
  • Primary objective : To deliver returns that, before accounting for expenses, mirror the total returns of the securities represented in the Nifty 500 Total Return Index, while considering tracking error.

Key Highlights :

  • Minimum Investment: Investors can participate in this scheme with a minimum investment of Rs 500 per plan/option, with the flexibility to invest in multiples of Re 1.
  • Asset Allocation: Under normal circumstances, the scheme’s asset allocation will primarily consist of constituents of the Nifty 500 Index, ranging from 95-100% of total assets.
  • Additionally, it may allocate up to 5% in units of liquid schemes and money market instruments, indicating a relatively low-risk component.
  • Benchmarking performance : The scheme will benchmark its performance against the Nifty 500 Total Return Index.
  • Given that this is an exchange-traded fund (ETF) scheme, it will primarily invest in securities that constitute the Nifty 500 Index, making it a suitable choice for investors looking to track this particular index, experts say.
  • Entry and Exit Loads: This scheme imposes no entry load, meaning there are no charges for investing.
  • Furthermore, there is no exit load, providing investors with flexibility in managing their investments.
  • Fund managers: The fund will be managed by Swapnil Mayekar and Rakesh Shetty.

TCS Expands Partnership With Standard Bank Group in Africa for Security Settlement Operations

  • Tata Consultancy Services expanded its partnership with Johannesburg-based Standard Bank Group (SBG) to centralise its custody and securities settlement operations in over 15 markets with the TCS BaNCS global securities processing platform.
  • The exact size and tenure of the deal were not disclosed to the public.

Key Highlights :

  • SBG operates the largest custody network in sub-Saharan Africa with $635 billion in assets under custody and administration.
  • The bank sought to upgrade its existing platform and leverage emerging technologies to further streamline its custody and settlement processes and have all its critical business operations running in the cloud by 2026.
  • TCS BaNCS global securities platform to enable real-time settlement, reporting and high-performance services.
  • The platform has been deployed in seven markets including in South Africa, the others will be implemented by March 2024.

Cabinet approves Terms of Reference to Krishna Water Dispute Tribunal-II under Inter State River Water Disputes (ISRWD) Act, 1956 – request from State of Telangana

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the issue of further Terms of Reference (ToR) to the existing Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II (KWDT-II) under section 5(1) of the ISRWD Act for its adjudication between the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh (AP).
  • This is based on receipt of the legal opinion and in light thereof on the issues raised by the Government of Telangana (GoT) in their complaint under section (3) of the Inter-State River Water Disputes (ISRWD) Act, 1956.
  • The resolution of the dispute between the two States on the use, distribution or control of Krishna River waters will open new avenues of growth in both the States of Telangana and AP and will be beneficial for the people of both these States, thus helping in building our country stronger.
  • Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II was constituted by the Central Government on 02.04.2004 on requests made by the party States under Section 3 of the ISRWD Act, 1956.
  • Subsequently, on 02.06.2014, Telangana, as a State of the Union of India, came into existence.
  • As per section 89 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act (APRA), 2014, the tenure of the KWDT-II was extended to address the clauses (a) and (b) of the said section of APRA, 2014.

The Cabinet approved Amendment to the Central Universities Act, 2009 for setting up of Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University in the State of Telangana

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi gave its approval for the introduction in Parliament, a Bill, namely, the Central Universities (Amendment), Bill, 2023 further to amend the Central Universities Act, 2009 for setting up of Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University at Mulugu District in the State of Telangana as provided in the Thirteenth Schedule to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 (no. 6 of 2014).
  • There would be provision of funds of 889.07 crore.
  • The new university will not only increase access and improve the quality of higher education in the State but also promote avenues of higher education and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in tribal art, culture and traditional knowledge system for the benefit of the tribal population in the State.
  • This new university will also create additional capacity and will strive to remove regional imbalances.

Cabinet approves Revised Cost of completion of balance works of North Koel Reservoir Project in Bihar & Jharkhand

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs Chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given its approval to a proposal of the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti to complete the balance works of North Koel Reservoir Project at a revised Cost of Rs. 2,430.76 crores (central share: Rs.1,836.41 crore) as against the balance cost of Rs.1,622.27 crore (central share: Rs.1,378.60 crore) approved earlier in August, 2017.
  • On completion of the balance works, the project would provide additional annual irrigation to 42,301 ha in the four drought prone districts of Jharkhand and Bihar.
  • North Koel Reservoir Project is an inter-state major irrigation project with command area lying in the two States of Bihar and Jharkhand.
  • The project comprises a dam on the North Koel river near Kutku village (District Latehar, Jharkhand), a barrage 96 km downstream of the dam (at Mohammadganj, District Palamu, Jharkhand), Right Main Canal (RMC) and Left Main Canal (LMC) taking off from the barrage.
  • The Construction of the dam and ancillary activities started in the year 1972 by Govt. of Bihar from its own resources.
  • The work continued till 1993 and was stopped in that year by the Forest Department, Govt. of Bihar.
  • Subsequently, at the request of both State Governments, certain other components were found necessary to be included in the project. The complete lining of RMC and LMC was also regarded as essential from technical considerations to derive the envisaged irrigation potential.
  • Thus, the works of the Gaya distribution system, lining of RMC and LMC, remodelling of enroute structures, construction of a few new structures and one-time Special Package for R&R of Project Affected Families (PAFs) were to be provided for in the updated cost estimate.
  • Accordingly, a Revised Cost Estimate of the project was prepared. Out of the cost of balance works of Rs.2430.76 crore, the Central would provide Rs.1836.41 crore.

50th India International Knit Fair to be held from October 12 to 14

  • The 50th India International Knit Fair will be held from 12th to 14th October at the India Knit Fair Association complex (IKFA) in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu.
  • The fair’s main theme is “Active and Sportswear, Environmental Social Governance, Artificial Intelligence and Digitalisation”.
  • Seventy exhibitors from Tiruppur, Chennai, Coimbatore, Karur, and Gujarat will take part in the fair.
  • Chairman of the Association, A. Sakthivel Informed that the IKFA has tied up with the Sourcing Consultants Association, the Association of Buying Agents for Textiles, Brand Sourcing Leaders, and the NIFT Alumni.
  • Leading buyers and their representatives from Europe, the US, the UK and other countries have been invited to the fair.

PM Modi to lay the foundation stone and dedicate multiple development projects worth about Rs 5000 crores in Rajasthan

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Jodhpur, Rajasthan where he will lay the foundation stone and dedicate multiple development projects worth about five thousand crore rupees in sectors like road, rail, aviation, health and higher education.
  • He will lay the foundation stone of important projects for strengthening the Health infrastructure in Rajasthan.
  • The projects include 350 bedded Trauma Centre and Critical Care Hospital Block at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Jodhpur and seven Critical Care Blocks under Pradhan Mantri – Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) to be developed across Rajasthan.
  • The integrated centre for Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care at AIIMS Jodhpur will be developed at a cost of more than 350 crore rupees.
  • It will encompass various facilities such as triage, diagnostics, daycare, wards, private rooms, modular operating theatres, ICUs and dialysis areas.
  • It will bring a holistic approach to the management of trauma and emergency cases by providing multidisciplinary and comprehensive care to patients.
  • The seven Critical Care Blocks across Rajasthan will augment district-level critical care infrastructure benefiting people of the state.
  • Mr Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the development of the state-of-the-art New Terminal Building at Jodhpur Airport.
  • To be built at a total cost of 480 crore rupees, the New Terminal Building will be developed in an area of about 24 thousand square meters and will be equipped to provide services to 2,500 passengers during peak hours.
  • It will cater to 35 lakh passengers annually, improving connectivity and boosting tourism in the region.
  • The Prime Minister will also dedicate the IIT Jodhpur campus to the Nation.
  • The state-of-the-art campus has been built at a cost of more than 1135 crore rupees.
  • It is a step towards providing high-quality holistic education and building infrastructure for supporting cutting-edge research and innovation initiatives.

  • Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, Shri Arjun Munda inaugurated the 4th EMRS National Cultural & Literary Fest and Kala Utsav- 2023, in the presence of Chief Minister, Uttarakhand, Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami, at Dehradun.
  • The event has been organized by the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS) under Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs, and hosted by Eklavya Vidyalaya Sangathan Samiti (EVSS), Uttarakhand at Maharana Pratap Sports College, Dehradun.
  • The Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) Cultural Fest provides tribal students a national platform to showcase their hidden talents in different spheres.
  • The four-day event (3rd – 6th October) this year would witness performances from over 2000 tribal students from 22 States.
  • More than 20 events will be organized in this fest, from dance and song performances to quizzes and visual arts etc. Stalls from different States have been arranged to showcase tribal cultural displays.
  • The ‘EMRS National Cultural Fest’ is the most awaited event every year for tribal students pursuing education in the EMRSs.
  • NESTS has been running EMRSs for Scheduled Tribes across India.

UNFPA India and IIPS Release India Ageing Report 2023

  • The India Ageing Report 2023 was released by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS).
  • The report was jointly released by Saurabh Garg, Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (Government of India), and Andrea M. Wojnar, UNFPA India Representative and Country Director Bhutan.
  • The report utilized the latest available data from sources including the Longitudinal Ageing Survey in India (LASI) 2017–18, Census of India, Population Projections by the Government of India (2011–2036), and World Population Prospects 2022 by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

Key Highlights :

  • The report projects that the number of people aged 60 and above in India will double from 149 million in 2022 to 347 million in 2050.
  • The report highlights the challenges, opportunities, and institutional responses related to elderly care in India, particularly as the country experiences a demographic shift toward an ageing population.
  • India’s current decadal growth rate for the elderly population is 41%, with the percentage of elderly population expected to double to over 20% of the total population by 2050.
  • As per the report, there were 149 million persons aged 60 years and above in 2022 (as of 1 July), comprising around 10.5% of the country’s population.
  • By 2050, this population will double to 20.8%, with the absolute number at 347 million.
  • By the end of the century, the elderly will constitute over 36% of the total population of the country.
  • By 2046, it is likely that elderly population will have surpassed the population of children (aged 0 to 15 years) in the country.
  • Currently, India has one of the highest populations of adolescents and young people in the world with 65% of Indians under 35.
  • Some states like Himachal Pradesh and Punjab reported a higher share of the elderly than the national average in 2021.
  • The report projected that the population of people aged 80+ years will grow at a rate of around 279% between 2022 and 2050 with a predominance of widowed and highly dependent very old women.
  • More than 40% of the elderly in India are in the poorest wealth quintile, with about 18.7% of them living without an income.
  • The data showed that women, on average, had higher life expectancy at the age of 60 and at the 80, when compared to men with variations across States and Union Territories.
  • The sex ratio (females per 1,000 males) among the elderly has been climbing steadily since 1991, with the ratio in the general population stagnating.
  • States reporting higher fertility rates and lagging in demographic transition, including Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, expect to see an increase in the share of the elderly population between 2021 and 2036.
  • The report pointed out that the major challenges facing India’s ageing population are the feminisation and ruralisation of this older population.
  • The report also highlighted that there is a lack of credible data on various issues related to the elderly in India.

  • The alliance is built upon a series of bilateral agreements between the member countries, focusing on surveillance and intelligence-sharing.
  • The core agreement that underpins the intelligence-sharing within the Five Eyes alliance is commonly referred to as the UKUSA agreement.

  • The Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi unveiled a 72-feet statue of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya in New Delhi on the occasion of his 107th birth anniversary.
  • This statue is distinguished as the largest bronze and alloy metal statue in Delhi.

  • The statue stands at a height of 72 feet and is crafted from a mixed metal composition.
  • It comprises 85% copper and the remaining portion consists of a bronze alloy containing zinc.
  • The statue weighs approximately 40 metric tons and was crafted over a period of 8 to 10 months.
  • It involved the collaborative effort of about 15 to 20 artisans.

India to host International Congress on Chemistry of Cement in 2027 in New Delhi

  • India has won the bid to host the prestigious International Congress on the Chemistry of Cement (ICCC) at New Delhi in 2027.
  • India’s leading research and academic institutes, National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCCBM) along with IIT Delhi successfully presented India’s bid before the Steering Committee members of the Conference during the ongoing 16th ICCC at Bangkok, Thailand.
  • Besides India, other bidders were from Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
  • The decision to award India the hosting rights for ICCC 2027 was made during the ongoing 16th ICCC held in Bangkok, Thailand

Tripura Joins Ranks as the 4th State to Implement an E-Cabinet System

  • The Chief Minister of Tripura Shri Manik Saha inaugurated an e-cabinet system in Agartala, aimed at advancing digital infrastructure development and the digitization of government services and information.
  • He also felicitated all departments of the state government which have made the e-office system 100% effective as part of the initiative to run paperless offices.

What is an e-cabinet system?

  • The e-cabinet system is a robust software portal designed for State Governments to conduct Cabinet meetings electronically and in an online mode.
  • It was developed by the National Information Centre (NIC), under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY).

  • Tripura becomes the 4th state in India and the 2nd in the Northeast region to introduce an e-cabinet system, following in the footsteps of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh.
  • He highlighted that 41 out of 94 government departments have already achieved 100% effectiveness in implementing the e-office system, showcasing significant progress in this initiative.

China launches new remote sensing satellite – Yaogan-33 04

  • China sent a new remote sensing satellite named Yaogan-33 04 carried off by a Long March-4C carrier rocket into space from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China.
  • The satellite will be mainly used for scientific experiments, land resource surveys, agricultural product yield estimation and disaster prevention and relief.
  • The Long March-4C is a three-stage launch vehicle fueled by liquid propellant.
  • This is the 489th flight mission of the Long March rocket series.

Centre’s fiscal deficit at August-end touches 36% of full-year target: CGA

  • Fiscal deficit reached 36% of Budget Estimate during April-August period of the fiscal year 2023-24.
  • Fiscal deficit stood at 33% during the corresponding period of last fiscal.
  • The fiscal deficit stood at ₹6.42-lakh crore as of August-end, according to the data released by the Controller General of Accounts (CGA).
  • During April-August period, the net tax revenue was ₹8.03-lakh crore.
  • It was 34.5% of the Budget Estimate for the current fiscal.
  • Of the total expenditure, ₹12.97-lakh crore was on the revenue account and ₹3.73-lakh crore towards the capital account.
  • Central government has fixed a target of ₹17.87-lakh crore.
  • This is 5.9% of GDP.

About CGA

NIIF and JBIC launch $600 million India-Japan Fund to facilitate collaboration and investment in field of climate and environment

  • The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund and Japan Bank for International Cooperation, JBIC have tied up to launch a 600 million US dollar India-Japan Fund.
  • This joint initiative will facilitate collaboration and investment between India and Japan in the field of climate and environment.
  • According to the Finance Ministry, the Government of India will contribute 49 per cent of the corpus and the remaining 51 per cent will be contributed by JBIC.

World Teachers Day 2023: October 5

  • World Teachers Day or International Teachers Day is celebrated on the 5th October of every year.
  • In 2023, World Teachers’ Day celebrations will focus on the theme “The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage”.
  • World Teachers Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the year of 1994.
  • World Teachers Day was organized on the 5th of October in order to commemorate the signing of the status of the teacher by UNESCO/ILO in the year of 1966.
  • World Teachers Day is observed with the aim of focusing on “appreciating, assessing and improving the educators of the world.”
