Former chairman of government-owned steel company SAIL, V Krishnamurthy passes away at the age of 97 in Chennai. Krishnamurthy was chairman of SAIL from 1985 to 1990.

His leadership quality and successful contribution to turning around BHEL, Maruti Udyog, SAIL, and GAIL into the most profit-making industry not just in the country but also globally – earned him the title of “Father of PSUs in India”.

(BEL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Defense Initiatives (DI), Belarus, and Defense Initiatives Aero Pvt Ltd, India (a subsidiary of DI Belarus) to build cooperation amongst the three companies for the supply of Airborne Defense Suite (ADS) for Indian Air Force’s helicopters.

 ADS is used for protecting helicopters. BEL will be the prime contractor and will be supported by DI with manufacturing and maintenance for the supply of advanced Electronic Warfare (EW) suites for helicopters under the ‘Make in India’ category.

India’s data center capacity is expected to double to 1,700 to 1,800 megawatt (MW) in FY2025, up from 870 MW in last FY, said CRISIL Ratings, a rating and research company, in its latest report.

The rating agency also pointed out that India’s data protection laws that require companies to store sensitive data on Indian servers will further boost demand for data storage. The anticipated rollout of 5G services by the end of FY 2023 will also play a key role. During the 2022 union budget, the data center industry in India was granted infrastructure status by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

NASA has successfully launched a rocket from Australia’s remote Northern Territory, making history as the agency’s first commercial spaceport launch outside the United States. The rocket blasted off at just past midnight local time from the Arnhem Space Centre on the Dhupuma Plateau, near the township of Nhulunbuy, according to Equatorial Launch Australia (ELA).

The rocket is expected to travel more than 300 kilometers (186 miles) into space on its mission to observe the Alpha Centauri A and B constellations — the nearest star systems to the Earth.

Mohammed Jaloud of Iraq was elected the new President of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) president, becoming the first Asian president in the IWF’s history in elections over the weekend in Tirana, Albania. Jaloud, former general secretary of the Asian Weightlifting Federation was a weightlifter himself for 13 years, and also holds citizenship status in Kazakhstan.

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), headquartered in Lausanne, is the international governing body for the sport of Olympic weightlifting. The IWF was founded in 1905 and has 192 Member Federations.

The Union government has appointed Nitin Gupta, a 1986 batch Indian Revenue Service official, currently a Member of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), as the new chairman of the apex direct tax policy-making body. CBDT has been effectively using social media platforms to urge taxpayers to meet various due dates and employs data analytics and information reported by third parties to check the under-reporting of income.

Tata Power Solar Systems, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Power, has commissioned a floating solar power project in Kayamkulam, Kerala on a 350-acre water body, backwaters area, having an installed capacity of 101.6-megawatt peak.

With the completion of this floating solar project, Tata Power Solar will not only reduce carbon emissions but also exhaust the unutilized area atop a water body to generate energy. This project is also one of the first by Tata Power Solar to be monitored and tracked by 24×7 CCTVs for added security and malfunction detections.

 Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan completed two years.The government of India launched GKRA on 20th June 2020 for 125 days with a resource envelope of 50,000 crore rupees to boost employment and livelihood opportunities for returnee migrant workers in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government has issued fresh surrogacy rules, making it mandatory for couples who wish to become parents through surrogacy to buy health insurance plans for surrogate mothers.

According to the new provisions, the intending couples will need to purchase a general health insurance cover in favor of a surrogate mother for 36 months from an insurance company or an agent recognized by IRDAI. for an amount that is sufficient to cover all expenses for all complications arising out of pregnancy and also covering postpartum delivery complications.

State Bank of India has received in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India for its proposed operations support subsidiary aimed at bringing down the cost-to-income ratio. The bank will soon start a pilot run in a few regions before launching the new subsidiary pan India.

SBI‘s cost-to-income ratio increased by 240 basis points from FY19 levels to 53.3% in FY22.In contrast, the top three private banks have cost-to-income ratios that are between 35 and 40% lower than SBIs. Therefore, the subsidiary designed to increase operational effectiveness can eventually aid India’s largest bank in significantly increasing its profitability.

Capital markets regulator SEBI imposed a penalty totaling Rs 30 lakh on Reliance Industries and  Savithri Parekh and K Sethuraman for not making prompt clarification to the stock exchange about the Jio-Facebook deal, which was disclosed through the newspaper.

Accordingly, Sebi held them liable for the violation of the provisions of principles of fair disclosure for purposes of the code of practices and procedures for Fair Disclosure of UPSI under LODR Regulations.

Regulator IRDAI reduced the solvency margin requirement for general insurers providing crop insurance, a decision expected to unlock Rs 1,400 crore of funds for them to undertake more business.

The decision is part of a series of reforms it has undertaken to increase insurance penetration in the country. This move will increase the capacity of general insurers to underwrite more business. It said the number of off-line returns being submitted by life insurers has been reduced from 40 to 4 and the number of online returns would come down from 8 to 5.

The data released by the demographic survey suggests that high infant mortality and under-five mortality could be one of the reasons India finds it difficult to raise life expectancy at birth.  Chowalloor Krishnankutty,86 passed away at a private Medical College Hospital in Thrissur, Kerala. He was a noted lyricist, author, and journalist. A former Staff Artist with AIR, Krishnankutty penned over 3000 devotional songs and authored more than 200 books. He retired as an Assistant Editor with the Malayala Manorama daily.

Krishnankutty is a recipient of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and Kerala Sahitya Akademi awards, Krishnankutty also served as the vice-chairman of the Kerala Kalamandalam.
