Indian hockey stalwart and member of the gold medal-winning 1975 World Cup team, Varinder Singh, 75 passed away in a hospital in Jalandhar. The former India defender had a heart ailment and was suffering for the past 10 days.

Varinder was also part of the silver medal-winning 1973 World Cup team that lost the final to hosts Netherlands on penalties. He also won a bronze at the 1972 Munich Olympics apart from being part of the 1976 Montreal Olympics when hockey was played on artificial turf for the first time.

Shapoorji Pallonji group chairman and billionaire industrialist Pallonji Mistry passed away in Mumbai, at 93. Mistry accumulated a net worth of almost $29 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, making him one of the richest in India.

World championships silver medallist Deepak Punia has secured a bronze medal beating Kazakhstan’s Maksat Satybaldy in 86kg freestyle at the U23 Asian Wrestling Championships in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

The 23-year-old from Haryana, who had participated at the Tokyo Olympics last year, lost to Azizbek Fayzullaev of Uzbekistan 3-7 and Nurtilek Karypbaev of Kyrgyzstan 2-3 in the first two rounds. Punia is part of the Birmingham-bound Commonwealth Games Indian wrestling team.

The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (Isro) Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) has received the crew module fairing (CMF), a critical structure that will protect the Gaganyaan module carrying the astronauts during launch, from a Bengaluru-based company  Alpha Design Technology Limited’s (ADTL).

Further, Alpha is scheduled to sign an agreement for the transfer of technology of the small satellite platform — Indian Mini Satellite-1 (IMS-1) Bus — on Monday. A satellite bus or spacecraft bus is a model, on which satellites or spacecraft are based. The bus is the infrastructure of the spacecraft that provides locations for payload.

Justice Satish Chandra Sharma took oath as the chief justice of the Delhi high court. He was sworn in by lieutenant governor Vinai Kumar Saxena at a ceremony in the Raj Niwas – the LG’s secretariat. The transfer of Satish Chandra Sharma from the Telangana high court, where he was also chief justice.

Justice Sharma is also on the advisory board of the National Law Institute University in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. The acting chief justice of the Delhi high court – Justice Vipin Sanghi – is now the chief justice of the Uttarakhand high court.

The partnership will bring the underbanked and unbanked segments of the population within the tax fold through trusted local touchpoints.

The World Bank on Monday approved a $250 million loan for the Indian government’s Road Safety Program to address the high road accident mortality rate in the country. The program will be implemented in seven states namely: Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

The program aims to help participating states reduce road accident deaths and injuries through better road safety management and institutional reform and outcome-based interventions on high-risk roads. It will also strengthen emergency medical and rehabilitation services for post-accident care.

The Assam Cabinet approved the formation of a joint venture company between the state government and the railway ministry to increase the railway network in the state.

The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, also discussed the issue of resolving the boundary dispute between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The cabinet approved an additional Rs 126.75 crore for the implementation of the relief package for ex-employees of Nagaon and Cachar paper mills of Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPCL).

The BJP-led government in Karnataka launched the ‘Kashi Yatra’ project which offers around 30,000 pilgrims cash assistance of ₹5,000 each to take up a pilgrimage to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

For this scheme, the government will be using funds of up to ₹7 crores from the accounts head of ‘Assistance to Manasa Sarovara Pilgrims’ which was announced in the chief minister’s budget speech for the financial year. The beneficiary should be a native of Karnataka and the applicant should be above 18 years old.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently granted in-principle authorization to Mufin Finance to issue a semi-closed prepaid payment instrument. Mufin Finance will use this permit to launch MufinPay, a digital payments solution that will complement its lending business.

A semi-closed PPI license allows digital banks, fintech firms, and large consumer-facing applications to roll out features such as digital payment solutions for lending. PPI can come in the form of digital wallets, smart cards, magnetic chips, and vouchers. PPI acts as a store of value against which goods and services can be bought and used to transfer funds.

The Indian Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has started authorizing two Indian private firms Hyderabad’s Dhruva Space Pvt Ltd and Bengaluru’s Digantara research & technologies Pvt Ltd were authorized to launch their payloads. 

Dhruva Space is a space technology start-up focused on building full-stack space engineering solutions and Digantara research and technologies are engaged in the development of end-to-end solutions focused on safe and sustainable space operations.

Leading stock exchange BSE has collaborated with the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA) to promote and create awareness in the state on the benefits of listing on its SME platform.

The exchange will appoint a nodal person as single point contact in Maharashtra for providing an end-to-end solution for registration or listing on its SME platform. This pact will help the micro, small and medium industries in the state to get registered in the capital market and raise capital from the public capital market.

World Asteroid Day is marked and celebrated globally on June 30 every year. It is usually observed to raise public awareness about asteroids’ hazardous effects and the measures that should be taken in case of a near-Earth object threat.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated the day as the anniversary of the Tunguska impact over Siberia, which happened in the year 1908. Tunguska is the largest asteroid to date that affected the earth. The theme of this year’s event is “small is beautiful,”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the ‘Udyami Bharat’ program at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. During the event, Prime Minister will launch the ‘Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance’ (RAMP) scheme, ‘Capacity Building of First-Time MSME Exporters’ (CBFTE) scheme, and new features of the ‘Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Program (PMEGP).

During the event, PM Modi will announce the results of the MSME Idea Hackathon, 2022, and this Hackathon is aimed at promoting and supporting the untapped creativity of individuals, promoting the adoption of the latest technologies and innovation among MSMEs. The selected incubate ideas will be provided funding support of up to Rs 15 lakhs per approved idea.

The four holy relics of Lord Buddha came back to India after being displayed for 12 days at the Batsagaan Temple within the premises of Gandan Monastery, Mongolia as part of celebrations of Mongolian Buddh Purnima.

The relics are known as the ‘Kapilvastu Relics’ since they are from a site in Bihar first discovered in 1898 which is believed to be the ancient city of Kapilvastu. The last time these relics were taken out of the country was in 2012 when their exposition was held in Sri Lanka and was on display at several locations across the island nation.

India hosted ASEAN Foreign Ministers and Secretary-General for a Special ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (SAIFMM) to commemorate 30 years of ASEAN-India Dialogue Relations. The Special ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Singapore Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan.

The Ministers reviewed the status of the ASEAN-India Partnership and set out the path for the coming decade. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab in its first Budget proposed to spend Rs 1.55 lakh crore with no new tax, and also provisioned for supplying 300 units of free electricity each month to every household from July 1.

The paperless Budget, with a focus on agriculture, education, and health, proposed to earn Rs 95,378.28 crore this fiscal, against an expenditure of Rs 1,55,859.78 crore. This means a revenue deficit of Rs 12,553.80 crore. By 2024, two super-specialty hospitals, one each in Patiala and Faridkot, will be established. Three more will be opened by 2027.

A new biography of one of India’s most firebrand union leaders and former Central minister George Fernandes will trace his journey from the streets of Bombay to the corridors of power in Delhi, announced by the Penguin Random House India (PRHI).

Fernandes, born on June 3, 1930, in Mangalore to a Christian family, burst into the national limelight when as a trade unionist in Mumbai he organized a Railways strike in 1974 that brought the country to a standstill. He became the Railways minister in 1989 under V P Singh’s National Front coalition government, comprising mostly Left-leaning parties.

Researchers have recently documented the presence of a new spider species in Rajasthan’s Thar Desert National Park Wildlife Sanctuary, in addition to a new record of a species for the first time in India. The species are Pseudomogrus sudhii, named after noted Indian zoologist AV Sudhikumar, which is a newly described species.

As per existing literature, the salticidae family contains over 600 different genera (a category that ranks above species and below family) and over 6,000 described species of spider, several of which can be found across the country, and more of which are still being discovered.

Gurunaidu Sanapathi has become India’s first weightlifter to win a gold at the IWF Youth World Championships in Leon, Mexico. The 16-year-old claimed the yellow metal with a total effort of 230kg (104kg+126kg) in the boy’s 55kg event.

Besides Sanapathi, compatriot Soumya S. Dalvi bagged the bronze in her event on the second day of the competition. Maharashtra’s Dalvi, a two-time Khelo India Youth gold medallist, heaved 148kg (65kg+83kg) to claim the third spot in the 45kg girl’s event.

The Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Department, Government of Odisha have been awarded first prize in the category “National MSME Award 2022 to States/UTs for outstanding contribution in the promotion and development of MSME Sector” by various developmental initiatives taken up for the development of MSMEs.

It is to be noted that the Government of India came up with the National MSME Award 2022 Scheme comprises of altogether 44 categories include Manufacturing entrepreneurship (12 awards), Service entrepreneurship (09 awards), Special Category Enterprises (14 wards), and Institutional Support to MSMEs (09 awards).

Food aggregator platform Zomato’s board approved the acquisition of quick-commerce company Blinkit for Rs 4,447 crore (around $567 million) in an all-stock deal. Zomato will be acquiring 33,018 equity shares of Blink Commerce Pvt Ltd (BCPL).

Zomato already holds around a 9 percent stake in the acquired entity. Zomato will also be paying Rs 60.7 crore ($8 million) cash for the acquisition of the Hands-on Trade Pvt Ltd (HOTPL) warehousing business. The founders of Zomato and Blinkit have reiterated that quick commerce is the future of food and grocery delivery.
