Govt set to divest 10% in GIC Re, New India Assurance

  • Government is set to offer 10% shares in the country’s largest non-life insurance company New India Assurance through an offer for sale to the public. The Centre may also do a similar dilution in the General Insurance Corporation (GIC Re). However, the timing is not decided.

  • According to the scenarios in the WWF Water Risk Filter report, nearly 30 Indian cities, including Jaipur, Indore, Amritsar, Pune, Srinagar, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kozhikode and Visakhapatnam will face acute “water risks.”

FinMin releases Rs 6,000 Cr to states under special window for meeting GST compensation shortfall

  • The Ministry of Finance is releasing Rs 6,000 crore as the second tranche to 16 States and 3 Union Territories under the special window to states for meeting the GST compensation cess shortfall. 21 States and 3 UTs have so far opted for the Special Window under Option I and the finance ministry has facilitated loans of Rs 12,000 crore to date under the special window, stated a statement by the Ministry of Finance.

Govt approves 21 projects under Scheme for Integrated Cold Chain & Value Addition

MNRE scales up PM-KUSUM scheme goal to 30.8 GW of solar capacity by 2022

  • The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has issued an order for the scale-up and expansion of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) Scheme. The target now is to achieve enhanced solar capacity of 30.8 gigawatt (GW) by 2022 with revised Central financial support of Rs.34,035 crore.

  • HDFC ERGO General Insurance, India’s third-largest non-life insurance company in the private sector, announced the launch of the AI tool IDEAS (Intelligent Damage detection Estimation and Assessment Solution) for motor claim settlements.

ICICI Lombard, FreePaycard offer bite-sized, convenient health insurance solutions

  • ICICI Lombard in partnership with Freepaycard, an online pre-paid card trading platform, has launched Group Safeguard Insurance. The plan will be offered to the members of Freepaycard, allowing them to receive an assured amount in case of any injury or hospitalization for treatment.

RBI imposes monetary penalty on DCB Bank, Jio Payments Bank for rule violations

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed monetary penalty on DCB Bank and Jio Payments Bank for various rule violations.
  • The central bank has imposed a penalty of Rs 22 lakh on DCB Bank for non-compliance with certain provisions on marketing/distribution of mutual fund/insurance etc.
  • In the case of Jio Payments Bank, the RBI imposed a penalty of Rs 1 crore for non-compliance with RBI directions on timely submission of application in the case of reappointment of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer under Section 35B of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 (the Act), the RBI stated.

RBI to extend trading hours to 3:30 pm from 2 pm starting November 9

  • The Reserve Bank announced phased restoration of trading hours for various debt as well as currency market from 9.
  • The market opening time was revised to 10 a.m. instead of 9 a.m. for all segments. Closing timing too was revised to 2 p.m.
  • From Nov. 9, 2020, the trading hours have been extended by 90 minutes till 3:30 p.m. for most of the segments. In case of ‘market repo in government securities’ the timing will be 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and ‘tri-party repo in government securities’ 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

RBI temporarily postpones circular on current account till December 15

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allowed banks time till 15 December to comply with its guidelines on opening of current accounts. The earlier deadline was 5 November.

ICICI Lombard gets CCI nod to acquire Bharti AXA’s non-life insurance business

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has given its nod for the merger of Bharti AXA’s non-life insurance business with ICICI Lombard General Insurance, paving the way for creating the country’s third-largest non-life insurance company.

Axis Bank revises stake acquisition agreement with Max Life

  • Axis Bank will acquire upto 9% of the equity share cap of Max Life. The bank’s subsidiaries Axis Capital Limited and Axis Securities Limited (together ‘Axis Entities’) will together acquire upto 3% of equity of Max Life. Axis Entities will have a right to acquire an additional stake of upto 7%.

Centre extends Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme till Nov 30

  • Union Government has extended the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) by one month till 30th of November or till an amount of three lakh crore is sanctioned under the scheme, whichever is earlier.

ADB approves USD132.8 million loan to improve power distribution network in Meghalaya

  • The Asian Development Bank has approved USD 132.8 million loan to improve and upgrade the power distribution network in Meghalaya, Power Minister James PK Sangma stated. The project fully supports Meghalaya’s initiative in improving the distribution system & financial sustainability of the Department,” the power minister stated.

  • The Reserve Bank will evaluate the impact of multi-media public awareness campaign ‘RBI Kehta Hai’, which was launched in 14 languages to educate the public about safe banking and financial practices.

RBI announces co-lending scheme for banks, NBFCs

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued guidelines under the co-origination model so that non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) and banks can jointly lend. The model envisages a joint lending process such that risks and rewards are shared. As per the guidelines, NBFCs need to retain a minimum of 20% share of the loans on their books.

WhatsApp’s payments service gets NPCI nod

  • The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) finally allowed Facebook-owned messaging platform WhatsApp to roll out its payments service in the country in a “graded” manner.

SEBI increases overseas investment limits for mutual funds

  • The market regulator, Securities & Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has increased the limits of overseas investment per fund house. This limit was enhanced from the existing USD 300 million to USD 600 million. Whereas, the overall limit of the mutual fund industry would stand at USD 7 billion.
