Procurement of defence equipment worth over Rs 5,000 cr approved to promote indigenization
- Defence Acquisition Council, DAC has approved procurement of equipment worth over five thousand 100 crore rupees from indigenous sources to promote indigenization. They include sophisticated Electronic Warfare Systems for the Army designed by Defence Research and Development Organization, DRDO and manufactured locally by the Indian industry.
Govt sets up National Startup Advisory Council
- The government stated that it has set up a National Startup Advisory Council to advise the Centre on measures needed to build a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation and start-ups in the country.
- The Council will suggest measures to foster a culture of innovation among students and others.
Cabinet approves over Rs 4300 cr to establish permanent campuses for new NITs
- Union Cabinet approved to Revised Cost Estimates for establishment of permanent campuses of new National Institutes of Technology, NITs, at a total cost of 90 crore rupees for the period till 2021-2022.
- NITs were established in the year 2009 and started functioning from academic year 2010-2011 in their temporary campus with very limited space and infrastructure. These NITs will be fully functional from their permanent campuses by 31st March, 2022.

WHO meeting underway to decide about declaring corona virus outbreak “An emergency
- A meeting of the World Health Organisation in Geneva to consider declaring outbreak of corona virus in China, an emergency. The UN body will decide if the outbreak is a matter of international concern.
- The meeting is important because the WHO thinks immediate and coordinated international action may be needed to contain the virus infection. If the outbreak is declared an emergency, the UN body may advise countries to take tighter quarantine measures.

RBI buys Rs 10,000 crore of long-term securities in fourth special open market operation

- Maharashtra cabinet has approved a proposal to allow malls, multiplexes, shops and eateries to remain open round the clock.
- The decision will come into force from 27th January and will be implemented only in non-residential areas like Bandra Kurla Complex and Nariman Point.
Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi Palaniswami lays foundation for DLF DownTown in Chennai
- Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami laid foundation for the construction of DLF DownTown, a joint venture of the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) and DLF, for housing information technology (IT) firms under one roof.

Zomato acquires UberEats India for nearly Rs 2,500 crore in all-stock deal
- Zomato announced that it has acquired Uber’s Food Delivery Business in India in an all-stock deal and Uber will have 9.99 per cent stake in the Deepinder Goyal-led food delivery platform.
- It is in the range of over USD 350 million or nearly Rs 2,500 crore. Uber Eats in India will discontinue operations and direct restaurants, delivery partners, and users of the Uber Eats apps to the Zomato platform.
Adani Capital acquires Essel Finance’s MSME loan business
- Adani Capital Pvt Ltd, the NBFC arm of the Adani Group, has acquired Essel Finance’s MSME loan business.
- Adani Capital stated it has a loan book of approximately Rs 145 crore. As of December 31, 2019 the overall lending book of NBFC and the housing finance business was Rs 1,100 crore, with the latter contributing Rs 150 crore.

- The GSI’s marine and coastal survey division, based at Mangaluru, has mapped most of India’s 2.1 million square kilometre of “exclusive economic zone” and has a vast repository of offshore data.

IMF cuts India’s growth rate for 2019-20 to 4.8%, projects 5.8% growth in next fiscal
- Calling it one of the “negative surprises“, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on sharply cut India’s growth estimate for the current fiscal to 8 per cent, darkening the economic picture from the rosy 7.5 per cent made this time last year.

RBI ranked sixth among central banks in buying gold abroad
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) bought 5 tonnes of gold last October.
- The RBI holds 625.2 tonnes of gold, forming 6.6 per cent of its forex reserves as per World Gold Council (WGC).
- RBI became the sixth largest buyer when it purchased 25.2 tonnes in first 10 months of 2019 to hedge government’s sovereign gold bond issue.
- The central banks of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Poland bought more than India in 2019. In 2019, Uzbekistan and Venezuela sold 16.6 tonnes and 30.3 tonnes of gold.

Khelo India Youth Games: Maharashtra crowned champion
- Maharashtra maintained its supremacy in Khelo India Youth Games by improving upon its last year’s performance and finishing at the top of the table with a massive haul of 256 medals, comprising 78 gold, 77 silver and 101 bronze, as the 13-day sporting extravaganza came to a close
- Maharashtra — which received the winner’s trophy from Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the presence of Union Minister of State for Food Processing Rameshwar Teli and Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju in a glittering closing ceremony — was followed by Haryana (200, 68 gold) and Delhi (122, 39 gold).

- Former Test batsman and National selector Man Mohan Sood passed away . He was 80.
- A batsman with a flair to play strokes, Sood made his first class debut against Services at Ferozeshah Kotla in 1957 and played his final Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir at Srinagar in 1964

- Terry Jones, a star of the seminal comedy group “Monty Python” who delivered some of the most famous lines in comedic history, has died, his agent confirmed to the PA Media news agency. He was 77.
