Procurement of defence equipment worth over Rs 5,000 cr approved to promote indigenization

  • Defence Acquisition Council, DAC has approved procurement of equipment worth over five thousand 100 crore rupees from indigenous sources to promote indigenization. They include sophisticated Electronic Warfare Systems for the Army designed by Defence Research and Development Organization, DRDO and manufactured locally by the Indian industry.

Govt sets up National Startup Advisory Council

  • The government stated that it has set up a National Startup Advisory Council to advise the Centre on measures needed to build a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation and start-ups in the country.

Cabinet approves over Rs 4300 cr to establish permanent campuses for new NITs

  • Union Cabinet approved to Revised Cost Estimates for establishment of permanent campuses of new National Institutes of Technology, NITs, at a total cost of 90 crore rupees for the period till 2021-2022.
  • NITs were established in the year 2009 and started functioning from academic year 2010-2011 in their temporary campus with very limited space and infrastructure. These NITs will be fully functional from their permanent campuses by 31st March, 2022.

Zomato acquires UberEats India for nearly Rs 2,500 crore in all-stock deal

  • Zomato announced that it has acquired Uber’s Food Delivery Business in India in an all-stock deal and Uber will have 9.99 per cent stake in the Deepinder Goyal-led food delivery platform.
  • It is in the range of over USD 350 million or nearly Rs 2,500 crore. Uber Eats in India will discontinue operations and direct restaurants, delivery partners, and users of the Uber Eats apps to the Zomato platform.

Adani Capital acquires Essel Finance’s MSME loan business

  • Adani Capital Pvt Ltd, the NBFC arm of the Adani Group, has acquired Essel Finance’s MSME loan business.
  • Adani Capital stated it has a loan book of approximately Rs 145 crore. As of December 31, 2019 the overall lending book of NBFC and the housing finance business was Rs 1,100 crore, with the latter contributing Rs 150 crore.

IMF cuts India’s growth rate for 2019-20 to 4.8%, projects 5.8% growth in next fiscal

  • The World Archery conditionally lifted the suspension on India, less than a week after the embattled national federation held its elections.
  • A statement from the World Archery stated the federation needs to comply with good governance and activity portions of the World Archery constitution and rules. Must report every three months.

Khelo India Youth Games: Maharashtra crowned champion

  • Maharashtra maintained its supremacy in Khelo India Youth Games by improving upon its last year’s performance and finishing at the top of the table with a massive haul of 256 medals, comprising 78 gold, 77 silver and 101 bronze, as the 13-day sporting extravaganza came to a close
  • Maharashtra — which received the winner’s trophy from Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the presence of Union Minister of State for Food Processing Rameshwar Teli and Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju in a glittering closing ceremony — was followed by Haryana (200, 68 gold) and Delhi (122, 39 gold).

  • Senior journalist and former BJP MP Ashwini Chopra passed away after a prolonged illness. He was 63.
  • The media baron-turned journalist was elected as an MP from Karnal, Haryana, in 2014. He was the editor of Punjab Kesari, Delhi.

  • Veteran Congress leader Shamsher Singh Surjewala passed away following prolonged illness.

  • The world’s shortest man who could walk, 27-year-old Khagendra Thapa Magar, has passed away in Nepal.
  • He stood at just 67.08 cm tall and was declared the shortest man alive by Guinness World Records (GWR) in 2010 after turning 18.

Bhopal’s titular queen Saleha Sultan passes away in Hyderabad

  • Princess Saleha Sultan, the titular queen of Bhopal, passed away due to a long term illness in Hyderabad. Her funeral is set to take place in Bhopal.

Former India Test batsman Man Mohan Sood passes away

  • Former Test batsman and National selector Man Mohan Sood passed away . He was 80.
  • A batsman with a flair to play strokes, Sood made his first class debut against Services at Ferozeshah Kotla in 1957 and played his final Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir at Srinagar in 1964

Monty Python Star Terry Jones Passes Away at 77

  • Terry Jones, a star of the seminal comedy group “Monty Python” who delivered some of the most famous lines in comedic history, has died, his agent confirmed to the PA Media news agency. He was 77.
