International Anti-Corruption Day

  • The International Anti-Corruption Day is observed annually on December 9, under the United Nations(UN) resolution (A/RES/58/4).
  • The day was selected to be observed, in order to create awareness on corruption and combating and preventing corruption.
  • The theme for the year 2019 is “United Against Corruption

Govt disbursed Rs 36,000 crore to farmers under PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi

  • Around 36 thousand crore rupees have been disbursed under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi as on 30th of November this year.
  • Around seven crores 60 lakh farmers have been benefited under the scheme.
  • The government is striving to double the farmer’s income by 2022.The Agriculture Export Policy, 2018 strives to increase India’s Agriculture and allied exports which in turn would help in achieving the goal of doubling the farmer’s income.

Human Library event in Mysuru

  • A human library, a concept which seeks to replace books with humans, will be organised in Mysuru.
  • The human library aims to break past long-standing prejudices and stereotypes by creating a safe framework for conservations by using a library analogy of lending people rather than books.
  • It intends to generate greater human cohesion across various social, religious and ethnic diversities.
  • Human Library is a registered international non-profit organisation with its administrative headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark.
  • In India the organisation is located in various places like Hyderabad(Telangana), Mumbai(Maharashtra), Delhi, Bengaluru(Karnataka), etc. Pavithra K is the founder of Human Library, Mysuru Chapter.

Haryana CM inaugurates Integrated Command and Control Centre

  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has inaugurated Gurgaon’s ambitious Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC).
  • It has been developed as the nerve centre to provide multifaceted online smart services to people.
  • The ICCC has been designed to serve as the nodal point for all online data related to the Smart City applications, including CCTV-based public safety and adaptive traffic management system, smart parking system, water supply management system, pollution monitoring, property tax management system and asset management system.
  • The Integrated Command and Control Centre was built at the cost of 38 crore rupees.

Odisha reduces Kalia assistance to Rs 4,000 from Rs 10,000

  • Odisha government has reduced the financial assistance given to farmers under the Kalia scheme to Rs 4,000 per annum from Rs 10,000.
  • The decision to reduce the Kalia assistance was taken after the Odisha government merged the Kalia scheme with the Centres Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN), launched in February 2019.
  • Keeping the parity of both the schemes, the small farmers/marginal farmers may be given with Rs 5,000 for 2019-20 and Rs 4,000 per year from 2020-21, so that they will get Rs 10,000 annually i.e Rs 6,000 from PM-KISAN and Rs 4,000 from KALIA.
  • The state government also made it clear that applications from big/large farmers will be collected through online as the big/large farmers are eligible to get assistance from PM-KISAN scheme which is Rs 6,000 per annum.
  • It is noteworthy that Odisha Chief Minister (CM) Naveen Patnaik started the Kalia Scheme for the welfare of farmers in December 2018. Under this, a promise of giving financial assistance of ten thousand rupees to small and medium farmers was made in two instalments for separate crops in a year.

CURRENT AFFAIRS: BANKING AND FINANCE

Exim Bank provides USD 500 mn credit to Bangladesh for defence procurement

  • India has provided USD 500 million (Rs 3,561 crore) line of credit to Bangladesh for defence-related procurement in the neighbouring country.
  • Export Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) entered into an agreement on April 11 with Bangladesh’s Armed Forces Division for making available to the latter a Government of India-supported line of credit (LoC) of USD 500 million.
  • The LoC is for the purpose of financing defence-related procurement in Bangladesh.
  • Under this soft loan facility, financing of export of eligible goods and services from India would be allowed subject to the Foreign Trade Policy.
  • Out of the total credit by Exim Bank under the agreement, goods and services including consultancy services of the value of at least 75 per cent of the contract price shall be supplied by the seller from India.
  • The remaining 25 per cent of goods and services may be procured by the seller for the purpose of the eligible contract from outside India, including Bangladesh.
  • The eligible goods and services up to the contract price to be supplied by seller from India may be further reduced from 75 per cent to 65 per cent and further reduction may be considered on a case-to-case basis.

Zestmoney Partners With Micredit, Launches Small Ticket Loans

  • ZestMoney, India’s first and largest AI-driven EMI financing platform announced the company’s foray into cash loans with Xiaomi.
  • The new product called MiCredit allows customers to avail instant credit as low as INR 7,000 into their bank accounts almost instantly.
  • Xiaomi and ZestMoney have a strong strategic and commercial partnership. The two companies have collaborated on a mission to offer affordable lifestyles to Mi customers. ZestMoney powers EMI products, both online on e-commerce marketplaces like Flipkart for Mi products, and in-store at Mi Home stores.
  • MiCredit connects the loan seeker with a service provider, such as ZestMoney. On the app, the application process for loans can be completed within 5 minutes, and the repayment can be done over a period, ranging from 3 months to 3 years in easy EMIs.

News Broadcasters Federation elects Arnab Goswami as governing board president

  • The News Broadcasters Federation has elected journalist Arnab Goswami as the president of its governing board.
  • The broadcaster’s body comprises of 78 news channels in 14 languages from 25 states.
  • The members unanimously elected Goswami, who is the managing director and editor-in-chief of Republic TV, to be president of the governing board.
  • The NBF board members elected R. Jai Krishna, a former journalist and public policy specialist in the media sector, as the first Secretary-General and Executive Director of NBF.

  • Sugandh Rajaram was appointed as the High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Ghana.

Indian shooters Saurabh, Divyansh, Elavenil get Golden Target award from ISSF

  • Three Indians, Saurabh Chaudhary, Divyansh Singh Panwar and Elavenil Valarivan, who finished as the number 1 shooters in their respective categories in the year-end world rankings, were awarded the prestigious “Golden Target” award by the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF).
  • This is the first time the federation introduced the Golden Target award, where they recognised and honoured the top-ranked shooters from 12 categories.
  • While Panwar topped the men’s 10 metres air rifle category, young Valarivan ended as number 1 in the women’s 10 metres air rifle competition. Chaudhary ended the year as the top-ranked shooter in the men’s 10 metres air pistol category.
  • The occasion was assisted by Raninder Singh, President of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Abhinav Bindra former World and Olympic champion.

Four eminent diplomats honoured with 2019 ‘Diwali – Power of One Award’

  • Four prominent diplomats have been honoured with ‘The Diwali – Power of One’ award in recognition and celebration of their work, especially at the United Nations, for a secure and peaceful world.
  • The diplomats who were honoured are former foreign minister and Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the UN Kairat Abdrakhmanov, former Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations Nicholas Emiliou.
  • Former Chef de Cabinet to the President of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly and Permanent Representative of Slovakia to the UN Frantisek Ruzicka and Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko were also honoured with the ‘Power of One’ awards.

Priyanka Chopra honoured at Marrakech Film Festival for 20 years in cinema

  • A day after receiving the Danny Kaye Humanitarian Award at the UNICEF Snowflake Ball, Priyanka Chopra Jonas was awarded at Festival International Du Film De Marrakech in Morocco.
  • The event was held at the popular Jemaa el Fna square in Morocco.
  • Other honourees in the festival were, Robert Redford, actor and director, Bertrand Tavernier, French filmmaker and Mouna Gettou, actor.

Poet Viswanath Prasad Tiwari to get Gangadhar National Award

  • Eminent Hindi poet Viswanath Prasad Tiwari would be honoured with the prestigious ‘Gangadhar National Award’ during the 53rd Foundation Day celebrations of the Sambalpur University.
  • Viswanath was the former President of the Sahitya Akademi between 2013-2014 and was born in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh (UP).
  • Tiwari, a former president of Sahitya Academy, has authored several anthologies. Notable among his creations are ‘Rachana ki sarokar’, ‘Kavita kya hai’, ‘Saath chalte hue’ and Bistar duniya le liye’.

Goa to host 2nd edition of startup India Global Venture Capital Summit 2019

  • The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), in partnership with Government of Goa, is organizing the 2nd edition of the Startup India Global Venture Capital Summit for Fund Managers and Limited Partners of Top Global Venture Capital Firms.
  • The theme for Startup India Global Venture Capital Summit 2019 is India Opportunity – Investing in tomorrow together.
  • The first edition of the Summit held last year in Goa brought together over 250 participants from over 9 countries and showcased the venture capital opportunities in India and facilitated a rich exchange of ideas on various aspects of the investor world.
  • This year the Summit aims to reach new heights in both reach and scope. The focus of the Summit is to mobilize global capital for innovation in India.
  • The Summit will bring together a series of engagements involving over 350 representatives of leading Global Venture Capital Firms, Limited Partners, Family Offices, High-Network Individuals, Government of India officials, top Corporates, and select innovative Startups.

Praggnanandhaa wins London Chess Classic

  • India’s R. Praggnanandhaa won the FIDE Open category of the London Chess Classic, which concluded with a tally of 7.5 points out of nine rounds.
  • The tournament, organized by the World Chess Federation (FIDE), was held at Olympia London in London, United Kingdom.

Manav Thakkar wins U-21 ITTF Challenge Series title in Canada

  • Indian paddler Manav Thakkar,  became the first Indian since 2017 to win an U-21 men’s singles title when he lifted the crown at the ITTF Challenge Plus Benemax-Virgo North American Open in Markham, Canada.
  • It was India’s first U-21 men’s singles title since the ITTF Challenge Series became an entity in January 2017, as opposed to being an integral part of the ITTF World Tour.
  • Nineteen-year-old Manav, who was part of the Indian men’s team which won the bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, dominated the proceedings in the one-sided final. Seeded second, the Indian youngster dominated from the get-go and offered Bentancor little to no room to score points.

ICSSR chairman Braj Bihari Kumar passes away

  • Chairman of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), BB Kumar, passed away.
  • Braj Bihari Kumar was appointed as the chairman of the ICSSR in May 2017.
