International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers

  • The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is held annually on May 29 to commemorate sacrifice made by UN personnel on peacekeeping missions.
  • On this day, we pay tribute to all the men and women who have served as military, police or civilians in UN Peacekeeping operations. We commend their professionalism, dedication and courage and honour the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.

Goa celebrates its statehood day

  • Goa celebrates its statehood day on May 30.
  • It was on this day in 1987 Goa became the 25th state of the Indian Union.
  • Before this, Goa, along with Daman and Diu, was a union territory.
  • Once Goa was liberated there was a controversy regarding merging Goa with the neighbouring state of Maharashtra or Mysore. However, opinion poll of 1967 suggested that Goa, Daman and Diu be Union Territory

Nepal celebrating its 12th Republic Day

  • Nepal is celebrating its 12th Republic Day on May29,2019. A number of programmes are being organised in different parts of the country to mark the occasion.
  • The main function was held at Army Pavilion in Kathmandu, which was attended by the President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Prime Minister K.P.Sharma Oli, cabinet ministers, senior government officials, heads and representatives of various diplomatic missions and other dignitaries.

India removed from US currency monitoring list, China stays 

  • The US Treasury Department has removed India from its currency monitoring list of major trading partners.
  • US Congress on International Economic and Exchange Rate Policies, the department removed India and Switzerland from the previous currency watch list of countries with potentially questionable foreign exchange policies.
  • India, along with China, Japan, Germany, Switzerland and South Korea, was placed in the bi-annual currency watch list in October last year.
  • Now nine major trading partners continue to be placed on Treasury’s ‘Monitoring List’ of major trading partners that merit close attention to their currency practices.

Song ‘Hawa Aane De’ launched to spread awareness about Air pollution

  • Union Environment Ministry today launched the song ‘Hawa Aane De’ to spread awareness about Air pollution.
  • The song was launched by Secretary, Ministry of Environment C K Mishra ahead of the World Environment Day on 5th of June.
  • This year the theme of Environment Day is Air Pollution.
  • The centre has launched the National Clean Air Programme to control and reduce air pollution across the country.

India elected to Executive Board of first UN-Habitat Assembly

  • India has been elected to the Executive Board of the first UN-Habitat Assembly, announced Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs
  • India has been elected to the Executive Board of the first UN-Habitat Assembly at the Plenary Session of the Assembly started in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • The special theme for the UN-Habitat Assembly is “Innovation for Better Quality of Life in Cities and Communities”.

Chola Investment gets $222 mn from International Finance Corporation

  • Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co. Ltd. (CIFCL), a Murugappa Group company, has received an investment of $222 million from a foreign investor anchored by the IFC
  • This is the company’s first U.S. dollar-syndicated deal since January 2019, when RBI permitted NBFCs to tap into offshore credit market. CIFCL would use the funds to help small road transport operators (SRTOs) and micro, small and medium (MSMEs) borrowers, especially in the rural and semi-urban areas.
  • The present round of funding was anchored by IFC, a member of the World Bank Group. Of the total amount, IFC invested $92 million and the rest syndicated from First Abu Dhabi Bank ($50 million), MUFG Bank Ltd. ($50 million), National Bank of Ras Al-Khaimah PJSC ($20 million), and CTBC Bank Co., Ltd. ($10 million)

KVB to form venture with Centrum Wealth

Karur Vysya Bank Ltd. has entered into a pact with Centrum Wealth Management Ltd. (Centrum) to form a private limited joint venture (JV) to offer wealth management services to its clients.

  • The private sector bank will hold 51% of the share capital of the JV, Centrum 45% and the balance by the JV’s staff
  • The board would comprise five directors of whom three would be from the bank. KVB does not hold any shares in Centrum

  • Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa received the baton of Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) from outgoing Chairman COSC and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba.
  • Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa will be the Chairman COSC with effect from May 31, consequent to the relinquishment of charge by Admiral Sunil Lanba upon superannuation

Walmart appoints former Google executive Suresh Kumar as chief technology officer

  • US-based retail chain Walmart has appointed Suresh Kumar, an IIT Madras graduate and former Google executive, as chief technology officer and chief development officer.
  • He will directly report to President and Chief Executive Officer Doug McMillon

Scott Morrison sworn in as Australia’s prime minister

  • Scott Morrison has been sworn in as Australia’s prime minister
  • Along with Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack, Mr. Morrison was sworn in by Queen Elizabeth’s official representative in Australia, Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove, at a ceremony in the capital, Canberra.
  • A record number of seven women were sworn into the new Cabinet with Nationals deputy leader Bridget McKenzie becoming Australia’s first female agriculture minister
  • The 46th Parliament is expected to open in the first week of July.

TNAU V-C Bestowed With ‘Lifetime Recognition Award’ by the Confederation of Horticulture Association of India

  • ‘Lifetime Recognition Award’ by the Confederation of Horticulture Association of India was given to Professor N. Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
  • The award has been conferred for his outstanding contribution in the field of horticulture and academic leadership focused on human resource development in agriculture at the International Conference on Innovative horticulture at Pantnagar, Uttarakhand.

Indian writer Annie Zaidi is 2019 winner of the $100,000 Nine Dots Prize

  • Indian writer Annie Zaidi was announced as the 2019 winner of Nine Dots Prize.
  • The 100,000 US dollars award is a prestigious book prize created to award innovative thinking that addresses contemporary issues around the world.
  • Mumbai-based Zaidi, a freelance writer won for her entry ‘Bread, Cement, Cactus’ – combining memoir and reportage to explore concepts of home and belonging rooted in her experience of contemporary life in India.

  • Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Professor Ashutosh Sharma released four popular science books published by Vigyan Prasar in New Delhi.
  • The books released are ‘Voyage to Antarctica’ authored by Felix Bast, ‘Story of Consciousness’ by Govind Bhattacharjee, ‘An Autobiography of Moon’ written by Ramesh Shishu and ‘Shambhu Nath De – The discovery of cholera toxins’ by MS Murthy.

India Ranks 43rd in IMD World Competitiveness Ranking

  • India has moved up one place to rank 43rd most competitive economy in the world on the back of its robust economic growth, a large labour force and its huge market size, while Singapore has toppled the US to grab the top position.
  • Singapore has moved up to the top, from the third position last year, while the US has slipped to the third place in the 2019 edition of the IMD World Competitiveness Rankings.
  • The index has been topped by Singapore, followed by Hong Kong and United States at second and third position respectively.
  • Venezuela ranked last in the index at 63rd.

Army Conducts Children Summer Adventure Camp 2019 at Manali 

  • Western Command Children Summer Adventure Camp 2019 is being organised at Manali from 27 May to 02 June 2019.
  • The seven day camp is being conducted under the aegis of Rising Star Brigade.
  • This camp aims to provide a wholesome outdoor exposure to young boys and girls through educational, recreational and adventure activities.
  • A total of 218 children from various units of Western Command of Indian Army have volunteered to attend the camp.

IAF signs MoU with ISRO for crew selection, training for Gaganyaan Programme

  • Indian Air Force has signed an MoU with ISRO for crew selection and training for the prestigious Gaganyaan Programme. Air Vice Marshal R G K Kapoor handed over the MoU to R Hutton, Project Director of Gaganyaan Programme.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address last year, had announced the launch of Gaganyaan – India’s maiden human spaceflight programme by 2022.
  • This programme will provide a unique micro-gravity platform in space for conducting experiments and test for future technologies.

Ivo Karlovic becomes oldest man to win match at French Open

  • Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic became the oldest man to win a match at the French Open for 46 years as he beat Spain’s fellow veteran Feliciano Lopez in a first-round duel.
  • Karlovic became the oldest man to win at Roland Garros since Torben Ulrich in 1973 at the age of 44. He is also the oldest male player to win a Grand Slam match since Ken Rosewall, also 44, did so at the 1978 Australian Open.

ICC launches criiio campaign on eve of World Cup

  • The ICC has launched the criiio campaign on the eve of the men’s World Cup, bringing together 460 million people playing cricket globally to celebrate the magnificent diversity of cricket.
  • The ICC asked the fans to join the social cricket tribe by sharing pictures and videos of where and how they play cricket across the world using the newly launched #criiio and visiting criiio.com
  • This builds on the success of the recent user-generated social media initiative #WorldWideWickets and is the first of a series of programs that will be launched by the ICC over the next 12 months.
