Five time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi passes away

  • DMK chief, Muthuvel Karunanidhi, passes away at 94. He was made Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the first time in 1969. His five reigns as chief minister spanned from 1969-1971, 1971-1976, 1989-1991, 1996-2001 and 2006-2011. He also became a popular screenwriter for Tamil films. After independence, Periyar’s movement split into two. Karunanidhi followed Annadurai, establishing the Davidar Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in 1949. He was the party’s first treasurer and was elected to the assembly in 1957.

Kolkata man tops IQ world list with the score of 148

  • Amit Sahai, a 43-year-old senior professional from Kolkata has topped the prestigious Intelligence Quotient (IQ) World list along with two other Americans with a score of 148. He has a background in international sales of software, IT, ITes services and high end audio and engineering products. He is also a member of the International High IQ Society.

NITI Aayog identified 117 districts as Aspirational Districts for RUSA Scheme

  • During the second phase of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), central assistance is provided for opening of new Model Degree Colleges (MDCs) in  ‘Aspirational Districts’ identified by NITI Aayog and in unserved & underserved districts in North Eastern and Himalayan States.

President Ram Nath Kovind to inaugurate centenary celebrations of St Thomas College Thrissur

  • President Ram Nath Kovind meet Chief Justice and other Judges of Kerala High Court at Kochi before proceeding to Thrissur. President will return to New Delhi this evening after a 3-day visit to Kerala.

Dr. Mahesh Sharma inaugurated the 64th Foundation Day Celebrations of Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi

  • The National Academy of Art, Lalit Kala Akademi (LKA) celebrated its 64th Foundation Day and the event was inaugurated by Minister of State for Culture(I/c), Dr. Mahesh Sharma.

Restricted Area Permit eased for foreigners visiting 29 Andaman and Nicobar Islands

  • The Union Home Ministry has excluded 29 inhabited islands in Andaman and Nicobar from Restricted Area Permit (RAP) regime under the Foreigners (Restricted Areas) Order, 1963 till December 2022. This decision aims to increase footfalls and promote tourism. Government is also planning to open 11 other uninhabited islands to foreigners.

Startup India launches Startup Academia Alliance programme

  • Startup India launched Startup Academia Alliance programme to fulfill Government’s mission to promote spirit of entrepreneurship in the country. It is unique programme to foster mentorship opportunity between academic scholars and startups working in similar domains.

Xingkong-2: China successfully tests first hypersonic aircraft

  • China successfully tested its first cutting-edge hypersonic “waverider” flight vehicle (aircraft) Xingkong-2 (Starry Sky-2). Waverider is flight vehicle that flies in atmosphere and uses shockwaves generated by its own hypersonic flight with air to glide at high speed. Currently, United States and Russia have been carrying out similar experiments.

Venezuela’s President Maduro survives ‘assassination attempt’

  • Venezuela’s president, Nicolas Maduro, has survived an apparent assassination attempt after the detonation of the explosives overhead during a speech he was making at a military event. Maduro replaced the socialist Hugo Chávez after his death from cancer in 2013.

A three judge bench to hear the challenging Article 35A

  • Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra observed that the Supreme Court will hear whether Article 35A is violative of the basic structure of the Constitution. Article 35A gives special status to the State and people of Jammu and Kashmir. Basic structure is a collective term coined by a 13-judge Bench in the historic Keshavananda Bharati case to include a catena of fundamental rights, including the right to equality, non-discrimination, liberty, life and dignity, enshrined and preserved in the Constitution.

Uttarakhand 1st state to give ID cards to Gau Rakshaks

  • Gau rakshaks are protectors of cows who will now be known as gau sanrakshaks – which means ‘guardians of cows’. The initiative has been taken to distinguish genuine gau rakshaks from ruffians who resort to violence in the name of cow protection. Genuine gau rakshaks from six of the total 13 districts in Uttarakhand have been identified and will be issued identity cards.

Italian Bike-Maker Benelli signs MoU for Plant In telangana

Government extends deadline for imposing duty hike on 29 US products by 45 days

  • Union Finance Ministry has further extended deadline on imposing import duty hike on 29 products, imported from United States (US) by 45 days till September 18, 2018 from earlier August 4, 2018

Core industries growth quickens to 6.7% in June 2018

  • As per data released by Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, index of eight core industries expanded to 7-month high of 6.7% in June 2018. This was due to better performance by cement, refinery and coal sectors of the index. The previous high was witnessed in November 2017 at 6.9%. The growth rate in May 2018 was 4.3%.

ISRO to launch its heaviest satellite GSAT 11 on November 30

  • Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) heaviest satellite so far – the GSAT-11 (weighing over 5.7 tonnes i.e., 5,700-kg)- which the space agency had cleared for launch in June, will take off a spaceport in French Guiana on 30 November. GSAT-11 carries 40 transponders in the Ku-band and the Ka-band frequencies, and is capable of providing high bandwidth connectivity with up to 14 GB per second data transfer speed

Former PM Indira Gandhi’s aide RK Dhawan passes away aged 81

  • Senior Congress leader and long-time aide of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Rajinder Kumar Dhawan passed away at the age of 81 years in Delhi. Dhawan joined Indira Gandhi as a personal assistant in 1962 and worked with her until she breathed her last. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha twice, from April 1990 to April 1996, and July 2004 to July 2010.
