Eight persons A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H are staying on an eight storey building. Lowermost floor is numbered 1 and topmost floor is numbered 8. Their ages are different and everyone age is a whole number.

Note: All the persons whom are staying on an even numbered floor their ages are multiple of 4 and all the persons whom are staying on an odd numbered floor their ages are multiple of 3.

B is 44 years old and two persons are staying between B and F. B lives above F. G is 45 years old and two persons are staying between G and A. A lives above F. A is not 40 years old. The one who lives on the topmost floor is 40 years old. H is 10 years younger to E. The one who is 27 years old is staying below H but not on 1st floor. D is 12 years elder to A.  The one who is 30 years old is staying above A but below G. A is 16 years elder to E. C is elder to H but younger to E and C’s age is divisible by 13.

  1. Who among the following is the eldest person in the group?
  1. A
  2. E
  3. D
  4. B
  5. H
  1. How many persons are staying between E and H?
  1. 0
  2. 1
  3. 2
  4. 3
  5. 4

  1. E-6th floor
  2. H-40 years old
  3. C-3rd floor
  4. D-68 years old
  5. A-6th floor
  1. How many persons are elder to G?
  1. 0
  2. 1
  3. 2
  4. 3
  5. 4
  1. Who among the following doesn’t belong to the group?
  1. E
  2. G
  3. B
  4. D
  5. A

Direction (1-5)

  • B is 44 years old and two persons are staying between B and F. B lives above F. As B’s age is multiple of 4 so B must lives on an even numbered floor. Three possible cases-
Floor Case 1 Case 2 Case 3
8 B/44
7
6 B/44
5 F
4 B/44
3 F
2
1 F
  • The one who lives on the topmost floor is 40 years old. So case 1, gets rejected.
  • G is 45 years old and two persons are staying between G and A. A lives above F. It means A must live on an even numbered floor because G must live on an odd numbered floor.A is not 40 years old.
  • The one who is 30 years old is staying above A but below G. It means G is staying above A.
Floor Case 2 Case 3
8 /40 /40
7 G/45
6 B/44
5 /30 G/45
4 A B/44
3 F
2 A
1 F
  • The one who is 27 years old is staying below H but not on 1st

  • In case 2, the one who is 27 years old must live on 3rd So H is either 40 years old or 30 years old. H is 10 years younger to E. So E is either 40 years old or 50 years old. Now we can see that 50 is not divisible by 3 or 4 that means E is 40 years old and H is 30 years old.

  • In case 3,As we know that E is 40 years old and H is 30 years old. So the one who is 27 years old must live on 3rd floor but we know that The one who is 30 years old is staying above A but below G so that person also must live on 3rd floor so case 3 gets rejected.
Floor Case 2
8 E/40
7 G/45
6 B/44
5 H/30
4 A
3 F/27
2
1
  • A is 16 years elder to E. So A is 56 years old. D is 12 years elder to A so D is 68 years old and D’s age is multiple of 4 then D lives on 2nd
  • C is elder to H but younger to E and C’s age is divisible by 13. So C’s age is between 30-40 and it must be 39 years.

Here is the final Floor arrangement:

Floor Case 2
8 E/40
7 G/45
6 B/44
5 H/30
4 A/56
3 F/27
2 D/68
1 C/39
